Spetses is an island of contrasts. Though small, it offers pretty much anything a person could want from a summer holiday spot. Its one village, on the north coast, combines gracious old mansions, dozens of cafes, bars, tavernas and night spots, with shops, boutiques, art galleries, 2 museums and 2 cinemas. Cars are not allowed here so people get around on motorbikes and horsedrawn carriages, if they don't feel like walking. Beaches are plentiful and clean, and kaikis take bathers round the island and across to the Peloponnese. Spetses was traditionally a refuge for rich Athenians, and it still has an air of laid back elegance. It is also an island for walkers, Its pine-covered hills boast superb views and many coves offer almost private swimming. Its mild climate -- no fierce meltemis here -- so that its collection of bougainvilleas tumbling over villa walls may be the best in Greece. And with the Peloponnese a stone's throw away, you have access to its beaches and Epidaurus, too.
