Getting Around in Rauris:
The Schonblick Resort is situated at the southern-end of the main high street (Marktstrasse), which runs the length of the village. The nearest ski-hire shop, Sport Egger, is 2 minutes walk away but doesn’t currently take online bookings. Inter Sport does take online bookings and this is no more than 5 minutes walk away.
The village has two supermarkets; Bila, which is 5 minutes walk from the apartment and located right next to the Inter Sport ski hire shop and a large Spar which is about 10 minutes walk away. If you have a car and you want to get lots of shopping the Spar is probably more convenient as there is plenty of parking right outside the door.
If you’ve got children (we have four) this bits critical! The apartment is five minutes walk (150m) from the bottom of the Hochalmbahn gondola and the meeting point for ski school. This is five minutes walking with children in ski-boots whilst you carry their skis and poles not a brisk walk!
Getting There:
The nearest airports are Salzburg (60 minutes), Innsbruck (120 minutes) and Munich (180 minutes). Whichever airport you arrive into you end up driving down the A10 from Salzburg and exiting at junction 47 (Bischofshofen). From here you drive along the B311 for 20 km in the direction of Zell am See until you enter Taxenbach. Then turn right and from there its about 12 km to Rauris. Most mapping websites and sat-nav systems seem to suggest you should turn off the B311 earlier and route through Embach but this takes longer as the roads are steep and narrow.
Ski:
Ideal for beginners/intermediates that enjoy well-groomed, wide pistes with no queues. Most of the 36km of marked runs are above 1650m and peak at 2200m. Snow cannons cover all the runs to the resort, which lies at 900m. There are two gondolas (6-seat and 8-seat) that carry you (via three stations) to the summit, five drag lifts (t-bars and buttons) and one chair. Whilst drags aren’t ideal for boarders they are very well groomed every day so there are no bumps or nasty cross-slopes.
If you enjoy the social-side of ski-school the Karl Maier school really hits the spot. It has 20 or so enthusiastic instructors catering to all abilities and offering encouragement all the way; culminating in the awards ceremony on Thursday night when each class (children and adults) gets the chance to socialise together, pick up awards and generally let their hair down. Entertainment is provided by the ski instructors, which is interesting, but it all makes for a memorable end to everyone's skiing week
