Les Hirondelles is on the edge of the delightful ochre tinted small village of Flassan lying sheltered on the southern slopes of Mont Ventoux (1909m). This pretty village has a traditional square with fountain, an excellent general store with fresh bread and croissants daily, a restaurant with bar, a school, a church, tennis court and boule terrace. There are glorious views of the mountain with vineyards, cherry orchards, olive groves and fields of herbs - and of course, lavender. Throughout the year there is a constant change of colour and scent as the crops blossom and are harvested. This a paradise for painters. There are wonderful routes for walking, cycling and pony trekking. Explore hilltop villages, taste the local wine, take a kayak ride under the Pont du Gard, visit the historic cities of Avignon, Nimes, Orange, Arles or St Remy. Bedoin is nearby with its colourful Monday market, daily farmers' market and its bars and restaurants. This is Provence at its very best.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Flassan, France

Go wild: A series of paths called Grand Randonnee criss cross the whole of France and the Vaucluse has an abundance of these providing the most perfect walks. One such route is through the village and goes west to the Dentelles de Montmirail and east to the Sault Plateau and the Luberon hills.. In the spring and autumn anyone can join the guided walks which the village organise every Wednesday afternoon. A great way to see the country and meet the friendly Flassanaise. Cycling opportunities are limitless and there are very excellent hire shops if you can't bring your own bicycle. During the winter months there is invariably snow on Mont Ventoux. There is a small ski station on the north side of the mountain at Mont Serein, 40 minutes away. Above the village 15 minutes away there are two lifts open in the snowiest conditions. Every winter we are able to snow walk with rackets, cross country ski, picnic in the snow under blue skies and, if we are lucky, spot the shy chamois.

Wine, Provencal Markets and Food Festivals: Wine tasting in a local vineyard is must. The area is famed for its wines with the vineyards of Beaumes de Venise, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Seguret and Château Neuf du Pape nearby. The Cote de Ventoux wines produced around the village offer excellent and inexpensive alternatives. Provence has the most colourful of markets often with strolling musicians. The nearest if Bedoin - 5 kms away - each Monday morning. There is also a farmers' market each evening during the week where you can pick up local produce picked earlier in the day. The French love to celebrate their produce and this area is no exception. So there are festivals for the asparagus, the strawberry, the cherry, the lavender, the onion, the truffle, the grape and the olive to name but a few. Sometimes the judging committee dress up as the produce - to see grown men and women dressed as an asparagus or a strawberry is hilarious!

Children's activities: They can swing through trees or swim in the local lake at Mormoiron. Kayak down the River Gard or the Sourge. Visit the local miniture rail layout - it has to be the best in the world with dozens of different trains in a setting of villages, farms and miniture plants. Ride horses at the local stables (hats also provided). There are lots of acitivities that don't entail spending a fortune and of course there is always the pool.

Perfect all year round

Review Submitted: May 6, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
Les Hirondelles is a very comfortable and beautifully presented cottage on the edge of our favourite Provencal village of Flassan.

We have enjoyed stays here for several years, having just returned from a 2 weeks springtime break and would thoroughly recommend this well designed house for all seasons.

At this time of year we particularly enjoy walking in the green and fresh surroundings of hills and mountain slopes, bordered by orchards and vineyards for which the area is famous. They are literally on the doorstep and very much a part of local life.

In summer we love cooling off in the swimming pool and relaxing on the private terrace surrounded by a lovely garden.

This is a great region for leisure and sport cycling, and I have brought my bikes here many times. There are great rides through gorges and up mountain roads, Le Mont Ventoux being the most famous - and toughest!
It's also very good for painting and photography and I usually manage to paint a couple of water colours during a stay.

There are many restaurants to chose from, mostly very good and reasonably priced. We particularly like La Ferme du Pezet just outside Ville sur Auzon and Le Mas des Vignes at Ste Esteve on Mont Ventoux. Both close to Flassan and Bedoin.

The market at Bedoin on Mondays is very good, not to be missed.

Les Hirondelles is a very well managed property and there is always local help at hand for any special requests.

We love staying here and the cottage is a perfect base in this beautiful part of the Vaucluse.
