Photos and Description of this Dorset holiday cottage Three bedroom cottage in Thornford village 3 miles from Historic Sherborne

The Grange Old Stables was built in about 1840 and was originally the coach house, stables and coachman’s cottage to the adjacent Grange. The cottage is built of local ham stone and blue lyre with many original features which have been incorporated to make a beautiful family house. The wooden conservatory has views over the walled garden and the wonderful Dorset countryside making outdoor living possible on even the wettest of days. Then there is a summerhouse (the bothy) in a wild garden abundant with native grasses and flowers – a perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner while overlooking the stunning view or the sunset. The sitting room has a log fire and French windows onto a terrace. Adjacent to the dining room the kitchen is well equipped and has an Aga. The master bedroom has a dressing room (space for a cot or additional child bed) and an en suite bathroom. The other two bedrooms each have a basin and share a second bathroom. Bags of old world charm but with modern plumbing!

Bus routes link the village to local towns and there is a rail halt with train services to Weymouth on the coast or up to Bristol. Three miles away is Sherborne is said to be one of most beautiful towns in England and originally the capital of Wessex. Sir Walter Raleigh called it his Fortune’s Fold, a jewel in the Dorset countryside. Here there are medieval buildings, picturesque Almshouses, an ancient abbey, two castles and a delightful old shopping centre. The Dorset countryside is the setting for the novels of Thomas Hardy and its’ drovers tracks provide a wonderful environment for walking or riding. The legendary ‘Jurassic’ Dorset coast is only half an hour away by road. For anyone wishing to explore the unspoilt Wessex area of Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire, this is the perfect place.

Peace and comfort in idyllic surroundings

Plover Surrey
Review Submitted: August 18, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
A delightful, spacious, character property in beautiful Dorset countryside with a garden and view to die for. We were a family of 5, including 2 teenagers and an aged granny. We could spread out in comfort and enjoy the complete change of scene. The village had all the essentials including an excellent shop/PO and nearby Sherborne was a wonderful discovery. Just a little too far from the coast for ease in August - but that can be an advantage too. Our daughter, who is fairly severely autistic, settled easily and there were no safety issues. The property was clean and well maintained, tastefully furnished and I have no hesitation in recommending it.

what an absolute gem

Brook Road Essex
Review Submitted: June 3, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
The house is an absolute delight. Tastefully decorated and furnished. We lived in the conservatory and garden as the weather was lovely.

The garden is just beautiful and full of wonderful flowers and little hideaways.

We would thoroughly recommend this house, be it for families or grown ups!
