Foremost among Velez´s sights is the 15th Century castle. Restored in 1992 by the town´s Ayuntamiento (town hall) the castle boasts Arab foundations and walls which were then added to by subsequent rulers. Today the walls house the towns historical society. Also of interest is the Nazari Garden, built by the Moors along the same lines as the world famous Alhambra in Granada, with an emphasis on water features, grottos, beautiful flowers and clipped hedges. The towns of Salobrena and Motril are close by, both offer shopping, restaurants and nightlife. The local beach is at Salobrena. Only 30 minutes away is Granada which lies in the foothills of Southern Spain’s Sierra Nevada mountain range in Andalucia. The Sierra Nevada resort, only 45 minutes away, has skiing, at an altitude of over 10,000 feet and brilliant sunshine during most of the winter. It is possible to go to the beach and skiing in the same day. Velez is well placed for mountain climbing, walking or water sports.
