Built in 1817, La Grille is set on the edge of the charming hamlet of Fresneau with its honey-coloured stone walls and canal roof tiles. Surrounded by vineyards and fields of sunflowers as far as the eye can see, it is the perfect haven for lazy days in the sun. Beautiful Charentaise arched entrance gates open onto a large gravel sweep edged with flowering shrubs and climbing roses. The pool and cottage (with original bread oven, sleeps 2) are nestled in a secluded walled garden, filled with colourful borders and an abundance of passion flowers and hollyhocks. Both the covered terrace and paved pool area are the perfect setting for enjoying hot summers days and dining 'al fresco'. The original character of the house (sleeps 6), with its attractive stone fireplaces, exposed beams, wood paneling and tiled and wooden floors throughout has been carefully integrated with up-to-date facilities to create this charming and luxurious property.

    As this is our second home, and out of courtesy to other guests, we ask that you do not smoke in the house or cottage. A non-refundable deposit of 25% of the total booking value is payable in order to confirm the booking. The balance (together with a breakages deposit of £500) is payable within 8 weeks of the commencement of the booking. You will receive confirmation in writing of both the deposit and the balance payment. Payment should be made by cheque drawn on a Sterling bank account. Any changes to the booking dates (subject to availability) made following payment of the deposit will incur an additional administration charge of £30 per change. We reserve the right to change any holiday details, including the price, before payment of the deposit, in which case we will tell you at the time the booking is made.
  • The price quoted includes all electricity, gas and water charges. The use of bed linen and towels is also included in the price (please bring your own swimming towels). The pool is operational from early June until late September and is heated, as required, during this period. From October to May the pool is unheated. This is reflected in lower weekly rental prices. If you have to cancel your booking at any time, you must do so in writing. Charges will be incurred on a scale related to the period of notice you give and as a percentage of the total booking value as follows: more than 8 weeks @ 25%; 8-6 weeks @ 50%; 6-4 weeks @ 75%; less than 4 weeks @ 100%. It is advisable to take out insurance against cancellation of your holiday. You may arrive in the property from 4pm onwards on the date that the booking commences. Please vacate the property by 10am on the date of departure.
  • Guests are responsible for leaving the property in a clean and tidy state. Please leave it as you would expect to find it by, for example, emptying the fridge, cleaning the barbecue, emptying the bins and stripping the beds. A charge of £75 will be deducted from the breakages deposit to cover the cost of a thorough cleaning of the property following your departure. The caretaker should be informed of any damages/breakages occurring during your stay. Any small breakages or damages will be recouped from the breakages deposit. The balance will be returned to you within 2 weeks of your departure. We recommend that all guests are covered for any accidental damage and personal liability insurance during their stay. The use of the accommodation (including swimming pool and all other facilities) is entirely at guests’ risk and we can therefore accept no responsibility for any injury, loss or damage to guests or their belongings during their stay at the property.

Notes: A complementary 'welcome pack' awaits you on arrival, comprising bread, butter, milk, eggs, water and a bottle of local wine. The heated, flood-lit pool measures 8m x 4m, is 1.2 m deep at the shallow end, dropping to a depth of 1.8m. Surrounded by paving, beautiful plants and with plenty of sun loungers and garden furniture, it is the ideal spot for sunbathing. For safety reasons it is securely enclosed by a fence and has a safety cover. Adjacent to the main house is a very large barn housing a ping-pong table and barbecue. Bathroom towels are provided, but please bring your own swimming towels. There are plenty of games, packs of cards and jigsaw puzzles. Children's equipment can be provided on request, including two booster-style high chairs and two travel cots.

The Local Area - Things to Do and Places to Visit: Whether you want an active holiday or simply to relax soaking up the summer sun in this idyllic spot, there is something for everyone at La Grille! In addition to the local village boulangerie, the neighbouring town of MATHA is well serviced by supermarkets, butchers, patissiers, banks, a post office and thriving weekly market. There are several good restaurants nearby and plenty of local vineyards where you can sample and buy excellent wines for next to nothing. And of course, you could try the local aperitif - Pineau des Charentes. Play tennis only a few minutes walk away in the neighbouring village of HAIMPS, or enjoy a round of golf at the course in COGNAC. With very little traffic, the area is ideal for both walking and cycling. There are lots of interconnecting lanes which gently weave their way through fields, woodland and forgotten hamlets. With plenty of spots to enjoy long, lazy picnics in the heat of the day, you may even catch sight of the odd red squirrel or hoopoe.

Beautiful beaches are under an hour away and there are some very pretty towns and villages well worth a visit: ST JEAN D'ANGELY with its colourful twice weekly market selling fresh regional produce, cobbled streets and medieval timber framed buildings; SAINTES with its Roman amphitheatre and river trips along the Charente; LA ROCHELLE with its chic shopping, charming harbour and state of the art aquarium; COGNAC with its famous brandy houses and river cruises; the island of ILE DE RE with its wonderful seafood restaurants. There are plenty of activities on offer for the younger guest: The Futuroscope theme park at POITIERS; a fantastic swim centre at ST JEAN D'ANGELY (Atlantys); The world famous zoo at LA PALMYRE near ROYAN; make your own chocolate at the Chocolate Factory in ANGOULEME; visit The Valley of the Monkeys in VIENNE; a wonderful park in COGNAC offering crazy golf, playgrounds and large sandpit, and much, much more.

GETTING THERE: The Charente Region benefits from good transport connections which make travel to La Grille easy. ANGOULEME airport is only 45 minutes from the house while LA ROCHELLE, POITIERS and LIMOGES are all within 90 minutes. BORDEAUX airport is less than two hours away. There is a wide range of flights from airports around the UK to choose from, including direct flights to LA ROCHELLE from SCOTLAND, and arranging car hire for your onward journey is straightforward. If you prefer to travel by train, take EUROSTAR to PARIS or LILLE and connect with a high speed TGV to ANGOULEME. Yet another option is to take your own car. La Grille is only a seven hour drive from CALAIS on non-congested roads. Alternatively, by taking the ferry to LE HAVRE or CAEN, you can complete your journey in a leisurely five hours.
