Muhudu Niwasa - Sinhalese sea house is approximately 1.5 miles from Tangalla in the small village of Media, at the southernmost point of Sri Lanka overlooking the Indian Ocean. It is set in its own private coconut grove with a gate leading directly on to a beautiful white sandy beach so unspoiled and quiet, that turtles have been known to come into the garden to lay their eggs! Bougainvillaea, hibiscus and temple flower trees flourish in the garden and together with banana, mango and papaya fruit, complete the perfect tropical setting. The house is large and airy with a spacious teak veranda at first floor running the length of the house overlooking the sea. The windows to the rear have spectacular views across the lagoons to the hills in the distance. We have a wonderful host couple; Sarath and Renu who have been with us for 15 years. Nearest Beach: beach at 5.0 Metres

Tangalle is about 200km south of Colombo and is well situated for journeys north into the hill country and eastwards towards Yala and the game reserves. We have our own air-conditioning mini bus with a very experienced driver who can meet guests either directly from their airport or from their hotel. Trips to virtually all parts of the Island can be arranged including the hill country towns of Nuwara Wliya, Kandy and Ella. Visits to the ancient Buddhist temple of Sigiriya and a Turtle sanctuary very close to Tangalla and the game reserve of Yala, can also be arranged.

A magical place

We're a family of eight and we spent a week here in July 09. The first thing I'd have to say is that the pictures on the website don't do the place justice; siting upstairs on the beautiful verandah looking out over the garden and the ocean is an incredible experience. The beach, which is long and curved (I'd guess about two miles long) is all but deserted - we saw one couple once, the rest of the time we had the whole place to ourselves. The staff are wonderful, they go into town every day to buy food and cook. The food is delicious. We only ate out once. Tangalle, the local town, is small and manageable. There's a fabulous local food market where you will find all manner of extraordinary fruits, a "Food City" which is the main Sri Lankan supermarket chain and all sorts of tiny local shops selling sarongs and saris.

If you want absolute peace and quiet (apart from the pounding of the surf on the beach) I couldn't recommend Muhudu Niwasa highly enough. Go, go, go, it's truly wonderful.
