Archaeology Holidays:
At Kilnaborris House we offer archaeology holidays, where you can be taught the basics of archaeological excavation and recording, here in our very own historic grounds. The owner of the house, Michael Tierney, also owns The Archaeology Company, and is an archaeologist of 25 years with university teaching experience.
Kilnaborris Holidays will also provide you with tailor made packages that include archaeological excavation, theory, and visits to archaeological sites of significance. Please email Michael or Louise and they will tailor a bespoke package that includes all meals and drinks, tours and instruction. Minimum Persons Required for each Archaeological Education Tour is 6.
Fishing and Angling:
Banagher has everything that the fisherman needs including live bait, boat hire and fishing equipment. Of course there are also cosy traditional pubs in Banagher complete with a turf fire to warm yourself beside as you and your friends discuss the catch of the day.
You can fish in the harbour in Banagher itself, or close to Kilnaborris you can fish at Meelick or at any one of the many stunning locations on the banks of the Shannon. Alternatively you can fish at nearby Portumna and Lough Derg, or maybe Lough Boora. A fisherman's delight. Look up Shannon Fisheries for season dates and licences.
Families:
Kilnaborris House is a central location for a great family holiday. In the grounds of the house you can explore the fantastic bog with teeming wildlife like frogs, birds, rabbits and hares. There are swings and slides to occupy the younger members of your family, as well as badmington and table tennis for older children. We can recommend many wonderful day trips out for example Glendeer Pet farm in Athlone, Birr Castle Demesne in Georgian Birr and its beautiful waterfalls and gardens. Or maybe Belvedere House with its stunning lake and Birds Of Prey exhibition. If you fancy you can take your children for a trip to the aquarium in Galway, or maybe the interactive sculptures in Lough Boora for a picnic and fun? Closer to home take your family out to explore Portumna Forest Park and spot the deer- or if the sun shines bring their swimming costumes and let them play in the designated swimming area next to Lough Derg (lifeguard in July/August). Or just cycle to Meelick and have a paddle.
