Keswick is an ideal location for exploring the Lake District. Derwentwater Lake is a great lake for rowing with beautiful walks alongside it. The town at Keswick has a wealth of shops, pubs and cafes and there is also a theatre, cinema, swimming pool, mini-golf, tennis and bowling. Whinlatter forest is a 5 minute drive away and has mountain biking forest trails as well as 'Go Ape' - a high ropes course. Ambleside (15 mins) is connected with many well known characters, including John Ruskin, Beatrix Potter and Harwicke Rawnsley. Grasmere, (20 mins) is a charming village in the centre of the Lake District, beloved of Wordsworth who wrote of its lake, 'the most loveliest spot that man hath found'. Hawkshead (35 mins) is still the same tiny village of higgledy-piggledy houses, archways, and squares beloved by William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Cars are banned from the village, but there is a large car park on the outskirts.
