Photos and Description of this Haute-Vienne holiday villa Art Nouveau/Deco themed interior. Fascinating dollhouse miniatures collection

Jolieruine is a restored limousin home with a beautiful garden where you can relax in peace and tranquility. It really is a romantic retreat for all - ideal for couples as well as small families, and especially entertaining for older children. The spacious interior has a traditional feel but the unusual decor is unique, incorporating a collection of rare victorian tiles. Upstairs is a dollhouse and miniatures display. Luxury bathrooms are 'ensuite', one from the large bedroom, the other from the bedsitting room. Under tile heating makes it cosy but in summer the house is cool. There is a huge garden to explore with several terraces, splendid views a small pool for children and an animal menagerie. So with a beautiful house crammed with entertainment, numerous walks and interesting local attractions, a choice of local beaches for swimming, picnicking, cycling or boating and a private jacuzzi to relax in at the end of the day, you certainly won't need to go far to enjoy yourselves!

Montrol-Senard- amazing FLORAL displays and ORIGINAL artefacts from life in the late 19thC.(25mins) Lac St. Pardoux with its fabulous BEACHES for swimming and watersports, and swimming at the Bessines lake (both 15 mins). Rancon village nearby, boasts a RESTAURANT, bakers, cafe-bar and post office. Mediaeval church and porcelaine shop at Le Dorat. Bellac and other nearby towns offer a wider tourist and shopping experience, with the famous city of Limoges only 30 minutes away via the scenic D7or the A20 motorway. There many leaflets in the house for you to plan your outings.

Further information: At CHATEAUPONSAC there are lovely winding streets to explore behind the museum overlooking the valley and roman bridge. carry on and you come to the 800 acre of lakes at St PARDOUX with beaches, all the water sport facilities, motorised and otherwise , picnic areas under the trees and refreshment bars. The views all around here are stunning and provide inspiration for artists, photographers and birdwatchers. In March/April and October/ November the SPECTACULAR migration of Cranes takes place and the indiginous Eagles are overshadowed by these enormous birds flying over in huge numbers!

History of the House: The owners live close by, keep ducks and chickens and have a vegetable garden and are therefore able to offer free eggs and seasonal fruit and veg. as available. Jolie ruine has taken 5 years to restore from a total ruin (the roof finally caved in a month before the roofer arrived!) surrounded by brambles of jungle proportions (3 m high in places). There is a huge barn next door which we are in the process of clearing for use as a table-tennis and activities room. What attracted us was the potential view and the apparent history of the house which had been built with stones scavenged from ancient remains in this area, famous for it's Roman and Medieval history-Richard the Lion heart and the 'Black Prince' of the 100 years war being the reason for much of the fortifications in this region. The restoration 'evolved' as we grew with the house, and the subsequent eclectic decoration results form our love of ancient artefacts and the styles of the early 20th century

lovely house, lovely people

Review Submitted: November 2, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
This property exceeded our expectations. it was easy to find and on our arrival we were greeted warmly by our hosts. The cottage is beautifully decorated with amazing attention to detail. The dolls houses are absolutely fabulous and each one has a different story.
Every room holds a unique feature, whether it is the art deco lamps , the beautiful log store and fireplace or the fantastic en-suite in the main bedroom.
Outside is the most tranquil sitting area and the hot tub is amazing.
Stephanie and henry are the most welcoming couple for whom nothing is too much trouble.
We will certainly be returning in the spring to this wonderful, peaceful haven.
Owner's Response: The 'blood, sweat and tears' of converting this beautiful old ruin into something unique have been compensated for by the pleasure it seems to bring to all.
To quote Mrs. tractor lover ...'the photographs don't do it justice...'', so come and see for yourselves!

Away from the hustle and bustle.

Review Submitted: September 11, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
On arrival we found large welcoming and well appointed rooms, all recently renovated. A dishwasher, DVD player, hot tub, portable cool box all added to the relaxing nature of a stay here, as well as fresh veg and eggs provided by the owners next door. When hearing that we had young children comming, the owners bought a very large paddling pool, which was extremely popular with our two kids, allowing us to lounge reading our books inside or out. There are decent supermarkets within a short drive, but the property is set in a tiny collection of houses in a very quiet area with no light polution, great for star gazing from the hot tub! Attractions suitable for children are around 45minutes+ away, however the French road network is empty and a pleasure to drive on. The property and owner care is second to none. Thanks for a most relaxing time!
Owner's Response: As always, it is a pleasure to see our guests enjoying their holiday to the full. We always do our utmost to deliver quality services and provide a relaxing environment for the reward of seeing happy, contented and relaxed visitors.

Perfection in the Limousin

Lyn, Neil and Jess Staffs, England
Review Submitted: August 10, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
We had a brilliant, relaxing time at Jolieruine. There was everything you could wish for - lots of space and a wonderful, higgledy-piggledy garden to explore. Steph and Henri are the perfect hosts who couldn't do enough for us. We loved waking up and finding baskets of fresh veg and eggs on the doorstep. The hot tub was most enjoyable and it was perfection sitting in it watching the stars.
The house was clean and spacious and beautifully cool on hot Summer days.
It was lovely just to wander along the lanes around the cottage and there are lots of great places to visit nearby. The village of Montrol Senard is well worth a visit as is the Wolf Park near Gueret and Le Dorat. A little further afield, the Vallees des Singes (Monkey Valley) is brilliant for the whole family.
All in all, we had a magical holiday and can't wait to return.
Owner's Response: We couldn't ask for kinder and such appreciative guests. It was a pleasure to welcome Lyn, Neil and Jessica, and to see how much they enjoyed their holiday. We look forward very much to saying 'rebonjour' to them and to welcoming other nature lovers to our home in Haute Vienne.

My family were made very welcome at this interesting barn conversion. Lovely spacious gite with beautiful garden. The hot tub is a nice relaxing way to end the day with a glass of local wine and fresh eggs from the owner`s chickens was a nice touch.
Thank you for a lovely stay.

After the usual hassle of modern air travel, it was a delight to find that our soon to be home for the next week, really was only 35mins from the airport, surely its not just me who has suffered in the past from the usual, (estate agents speak) , 5 mins to the nearest beach! Yeah right, heard that one before.
Amazingly in just over 35mins we were turning into the small hamlet of Les Egaux, easy enough to find as long as you pay attention.
On our arrival we were met by our hosts, with the great enthusiasm that is usually reserved for old friends. A lovely couple of old hippies I suspect, (dont let that put you off though), they were truly gracious and sincere in their welcome and made us feel very relaxed and at ease immediately. Something that seems quite rare these days in what is supposed to be customer service based industry.
When we first entered “La Jolie Ruine” we were pleasantly surprised, it was full of light, (unlike some of the cottages masquerading as caves that we have stayed in before) and some of the quirky décor like the English Victorian tiles gave it a real sense of individuality unlike some “off the shelf” holiday homes.
The double height to the rear of the salon and dining room together with the vaulted ceilings in the master suite meant there was only one place that a six foot plus oaf like myself had to duck to avoid loosing the top two inches of my skull, excellent.
The garden to the rear, really does have tremendous views across the rolling downs of the Haute-Vienne, it is so green it makes your head feel good. This together with a nice mixture of hard landscaping and grass make this place great for the kids as well, if you really do have to take them along.
Seriously though, perfect for a family or a beautiful place to stay for a few peaceful days with just you and the love of your life.
The surrounding villages are well worth a look at, in particular the massive church in Le Dorat is spectacular and if you cant manage without a good shopping frenzy , Limoges is only half an hour away, and good restaurants 5 and 10 mins away.
There is even a beach 15 minutes drive away, the beautiful Lac St Pardoux...a great place for swimming or boating. Plenty to keep the kids quiet or great for a lazy day taking in some sun, with the added bonus of somewhere to cool off if things get a bit too hot!
In short, we have done this sort of thing before, with mixed success but this is one place I would definitely recommend to anyone.
