Perched high up on the hillside with full southern exposure, the Cave Yuccas property offers stunning views over the village, river and valley. The origins of the ancient town of Trôo are lost in antiquity, but traces of its importance as a medieval 'city' can be seen today in the heights of the village where remains are visible -- a surrounding fortified wall, dominated by a feudal mound and a splendid roman collegiate church. The hillside, covered with greenery, reaches a height of 129 meters and was carved from rock in various layers, in which caves were dug to form many picturesque habitations. Discover this extraordinary river valley of ancient churches, castles and caves, and relish the delights of the farmers markets, restaurants, and vineyards.

Notes: One of the great things about this property is that it is built into the side of a hill, overlooking the river and valley, with no road in front of the house. As there is no car access to the Cave Yuccas, you must be fit enough to walk on foot paths and climb stairs with your luggage, groceries from the market, bottles of wine, etc. The property is terraced with internal and external stairs on three stories, so small children should be supervised.

Unique

The house was in a great location for exploring the Loire Valley and was pretty unique. It was clean and in a good state and there were no problems booking or using the property. You have to be fairly fit to live there, but it's worth the exercise for the great views and and uniqueness of the location.

Highlight

Franni Melbourne, Australia
Review Submitted: August 18, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
When I am asked about our most recent UK/France jaunt I always cite Cave Yuccas as the highlight. I try to explain it and I show photos, but it doesn't really do it justice. The views from the terrace were stunningly beautiful - so beautiful friends have accused us of being photographed in front of a 'blue screen', the image of Troo cascading toward the river a superimposed film effect. We loved sitting on the terrace drinking wine from the local wine cave (open only on weekends) with friends visiting from Paris (45 mins on the very fast (and very expensive) train). I had to keep pinching myself as we explored the winding passageways of Troo, the cool banks of the river, the frescoed 12th cent church and the spirals of the Butte. The Troo cave houses are extraordinary and their gardens a delight. I still can't quite believe it was all real. Dreamy memories aside, however, the practical experience of staying at Cave Yuccas was equally memorable. Whilst you do need a degree of fitness to get around, the cave house is very comfortable and Alain was usually at hand if ever we needed anything - such as crepes or directions to weekday wine sources (!). Kate welcomed us warmly and made us feel instantly at home. She was happy for us to attach stair gates to the top of the spiral staircase and to secure danger sports so we could relax, to some degree, with a crawling and curious 10 month old. Our 12 year old daughter had her own little adventures in the garden and adored lolling in the hammock. It was just lovely; our only regret was that we spent too much time away from it - day trips to Chartres and Paris did not equal the pleasure we found at Troo.

Cave Yuccas Rocks!

frommontana Missoula, MT
Review Submitted: August 17, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Enjoyed the house, the views, the bathroom (the bathroom!) the garden and the location. Even kind of enjoyed schlepping up and down the trail. It was really OK- we made it an adventure and it was fun. Just be aware that you will not be pulling up in front of the house in your car...pack light!
I do recommend it - I enjoyed mornings with my coffee out on the deck, the friendly manager / museum manager, the smell of the garden. It wasn't always quiet. One forgets that one is in the middle of town, even though we were perched privately on the hillside.

Charming hideaway

FrauSchneider Cologne, Germany
Review Submitted: August 9, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
This is the nicest and most charming holiday home we've ever been to! The terrace and the view is gorgeous and inside it is furnished with much love to detail. Troo and the surrounding area with the Loir (we liked the small Loir much better than the touristy LoirE) is really lovely but we didn't leave the house that often cause it's just such an exceptional hideaway to relax.

Caves, Chateaux, Wine & Relaxation

Steve and Sue, Dorset Bournemouth UK
Review Submitted: August 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
The perfect place for a relaxing holiday in this beautiful part of France. Wonderful accomodation and a magnificent view. Plenty to see in Troo itself with all the cave dwellings. Within easy reach of chateaux at Blois and Chenonceau as well as picturesque towns such as Ambois and Vendome. Overall Cave Yuccas exceeded our expectations and we took away many happy memories. Thanks Kate, we hope to go back again one day.
