Photos and Description of this Paraza holiday house 2 bedroom house, sleeping 3/4 in Languedoc-Roussillon.

The house is in a quiet cul-de-sac, with a patio facing east by the front door, perfect for breakfast in particular. The house has been recently restored: on the ground floor is one large room containing the cooking facilities, sitting and dining areas. The middle floor contains the bathroom and the smaller bedroom, with a balcony. The bathroom has a generous shower, but no tub. The bedroom has a single bed, and there is a folding z-bed so four people can cram in, but the house comfortably suits three people. There is a tight staircase connecting the middle and top floors, without a conventional handrail. For this reason we don't think the house is good for either the infirm or children. The top floor is one open space with the double bed and sliding windows opening onto the terrace. This is protected by a wall and is good for sunbathing, or watching the night sky, or gazing out over the village and the countryside. The snow capped mountains of the Pyrenees are often visible.

The house is in a quiet cul de sac, in a village on the Canal du Midi, between the mountains to the north and the Mediterranean coast, close to the historic cities of Narbonne, Carcassonne and Perpignan. Spain is about an hour away. Parking is close and easy. This was the Cathar region, and the city of Minervois, site of a famous siege during the terrible suppression of this unorthodox religion, is about half an hour away. The village has a post office, shops, restaurants, and a bar. Our house is next to the gardens of the chateau, with a fountain in a small square. The beaches of the Gulf of Lion are sand and stretch for miles, with restaurants on them serving sea food, the wine is beyond compare. Bicycles can be hired in the village, and the surrounding countryside is very beautiful to explore, and in addition the Canal allows cycling without hills. Boats can be hired nearby for the day or longer periods. Its a wonderful area for walking, full of wildlife, birds and flowers.

Notes: On the ground floor, on entry, is one open space containing the kitchen, sitting and dining area. Also there is the original large fireplace. One can eat and drink either in the space in front of the house, in the ground floor of course, and on the top terrace. This terrace is a good space for sunbathing, and also for looking at the night sky, and across the rooftops of Paraza. The snow capped mountain tops of the Pyrenees can often be seen from here also. The kitchen was installed recently. so all the equipment is new. Standing at the sink, you can watch numerous birds bathing in the fountain, which can be heard in the house, and which gives the street its name, Rue de la Fontaine Fraiche. Two sides of the square where the fountain stands are the garden walls of the Chateau de Paraza, behind which is a spectacular old garden tumbling down the hill from the top of the village to the canal.
