La Maison du Palmier is right in the heart of Elne, a historic town situated in the Pyrenees-Orientales, between the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean and close to the Spanish border. The house is in a narrow street in the oldest part of the town near the cathedral, which is on top of a small hill. Elne was the capital of the region until the 17th century, but its history stretches back to Roman times. The town has shops, banks, market, restaurants, all within easy walking distance. It’s in an area of unspoiled beauty, sunshine and vineyards, with every activity on the doorstep from water sports in the Mediterranean to walking in the Pyrenees, culture to skiing. Perpignan is only 10 minutes away. Easy access to motorways, airports and rail links. The house has three floors, and has been fully renovated and modernised for easy living, with its own terrace and garden. There’s parking nearby. Sleeps 7: 2 double bedrooms, 1 single bedroom, 1 double sofa bed, 2 bathrooms, terrace, garden.

There is every kind of shop almost on the doorstep in Elne, from excellent fishmongers to pharmacies, butchers to boulangeries. Elne also has a lively market in the main streets. There are activities to suit all tastes in the area. Down the coast are the artistic towns of Collioure and Port Vendres, where many well-known artists such as Matisse and Charles Rennie Mackintosh lived. The hills are dotted with historic sites ranging from Roman ruins to Cathar castles. Perpignan is an interesting university town, or head for the hills and pretty towns like Ceret and Arles-sur-Tech. For walking and outdoor adventure, the Pyrenees are on your doorstep, and even Andorra is within reach for skiing in the winter. If you want to explore into Spain, the border is about 15 minutes away. It takes about 45 minutes to reach Girona, which is a fantastically well-preserved old city and well worth exploring. The rugged coastline of the Costa Brava is within reach, and Barcelona is about 2.5 hours away.

Stayed there for two weeks and thoroughly enjoyed the holiday.
After a wrong turning, we discovered the house right in the heart of the historic centre. The location could not be better; it was so easy and enjoyable to walk everywhere in the town.
Having hired a car, we decided to use it a bit and investigate the surrounding towns and countryside. What a wonderful part of the world! Everything you could wish to see within a short drive, from lovely beaches to splendid mountains.
The property was exceptionally clean and well presented; everything we needed was there.
Finally, helpful, friendly information from the owner meant that we would have no hesitation in recommending this property to friends.
