Explore Lake Como:
Lake Como offers something quite magical and still; it's blue waters and backdrop of snow-capped mountains makes for a peaceful and memorable experience.
Having featured in many movies such as Star Wars and Ocean's Twelve starring George Clooney who recently purchased Villa Oleandra in nearby Laglio, it has also hosted some of the most famous writers such as Byron, Stendhal, Shelley, Liszt and Rossini as well as diplomats and members of royalty for centuries.
Lake Como has become such a desirable destination that tourists from all over the world are now flocking to see it! Once an area completely covered by glaciers, today the Adda river makes its long 313 km journey from the Swiss alps into Lake Como forming its distinctive 'upside-down Y' shape. At 410 m deep and an area of 146 km squared, it's Europe's deepest and 3rd largest lake.
Venture a little further around the lake:
Venturing a little further, and just a short drive away, is Menaggio. It's picturesque harbour features mostly 19th century Italian alpine style buildings, all painted in muted tones. Sit in the square and do as the Italians do and watch the girls go by! Although peaceful and relaxing, there is a lot to explore in this classically Italian town. The old and 'new', the shops, restaurants, cafes, public squares and alleyways, the tree shaded lake shore promenades bordered by flowers, and the well-kept villas form a wonderful and serene place to holiday.
Experience the Italian festivities:
Italian Easter 2010: Palm Sunday Mar 28 2010 - Easter Sunday Apr 4 2010.
If you are planning your trip in June, you may experience the oldest historic festival on the Lake, the Sagra de San Giovanni, which is held on the last weekend of June. It is a weekend long festival of folk art and old world charms. The main attraction comes after sundown when hundreds of floating lamps are cast onto the lake, and this is accompanied by a series of fireworks. This festival of lights illuminates the lake and makes for a spectacular sight that continues into the early hours of the morning. The locals continue the celebration with an early morning parade of decorated boats, following by a full day of folk dancing, traditional music and plenty of tasty food.
September is when the traditional rowing race on Lake Como takes place. Palio Remiero del Lario attracts teams from around Lombardy, who come to take part in the grueling competitions.
