Il Romito is a lovingly-restored farmhouse overlooking the valley of the Nunziatura in the heart of the Chianti hills. The house comprises two buildings, the casale and the fienile, on either side of a courtyard. There are five double and one single bedrooms, and room on various sofa beds for further guests. The 'casale' has three double bedrooms and bathrooms, a long living-dining room, a library and a large all-purpose room with a fireplace and a television. The 'fienile' is a converted hay barn. The main upstairs room is a large, airy kitchen- dining room with a spectacular brick window, completely open in the summer. Next to it is a two-storied living room, with a double bed on a balcony and, on the floor below, a study/single, a double bedroom, and huge bathroom with a jacuzzi. The spectacular gardens include a swimming pool, a hot tub, two pergolas with tables for summer dining and, in the wood below, a stone table that seats up to sixteen. ADSL, numerous DVDs.

Our house is called 'il Romito,' because, the story goes, it was the romitorio or hermitage of the little convent called La Nunziatina, a Servite monastery connected to Sta Maria dell' Annunziata in Florence. The ex-convent is below the villa with the church, re-modelled in the eighteenth century, and a little casa colonica of which we are the co-owners. We are at the end of a driveway almost two kilometres long. However, two fine restaurants are within walking distance, and the bustling village of Gaiole is a 15 minute drive away. In the other direction, Brolio offers a fine wine tasting experience, while we are almost in the centre of a triangle formed by Siena (45 minutes) Arezzo (one hour) and Florence (one hour 15 minutes). There are numerous 'feste' in the fall in the surrounding villages.

Notes: There are two kitchens, one in each house: this allows guests staying in one house to enjoy breakfast while those in the other house sleep. Both kitchens are fully equipped, and there is a large larder. The two living rooms allow rowdy teenagers to make noise in the one house while grown ups relax in the other. Ther is a bose sound dock and a wifi modem in the kitchen of the fienil.

The house is primarily our second home, which means that it is decorated in a very personal way, with abundant tiles, furnishings and pictures from our travels and those of our children. Some of the decorations are positively quirky, but we like them, and we're sure you will too. The garden is very important to us, and a gardener will come round in the early mornings to look after it and the pool. If needed, we should be able to find a cook. .
