Elounda is a fishing village originally made famous as the star of the TV series 'Who pays the Ferryman' and the Disney film 'The Moonspinners'. The island of Spinalonga is a short boat trip from the harbour, recently featured in Victoria Hislop's bestseller 'The Island' this former Venetian Fortress and Leper Colony is definitely worth a visit. The quaint village of Plaka is 5 kms down the road (an easy bike ride) and is a great place for a walk a swim and a fresh fish lunch. Elounda has a couple of blue flag beaches and several interesting walks. There are a good range of shops, bars,restaurants and tavernas and a couple of nightclubs.
The regional capital Aghios Nikolaos is 7 Kms away - easily accessed by bus or taxi and this is definitely worth a couple of visits. by day take in the Port and Marina, browse the shops, visit the art gallery and museum and have a swim on one of it's beaches. By night there are many bars restaurants and late night venues to tempt you.
