Gaucin is a white village at the edge of the Ronda mountains. It overlooks a spectacularly beautiful countryside, the Straits, Gibraltar and Morocco. It borders the largest virgin forest in Europe. It has a beautiful castle that dates to Roman times, and is only 25 minutes from Ronda inland, and the Coast and its beaches. It is a Mecca for hikers, bird watchers, and those who seek tranquillity and nature. There are festivals throughout the year: 3 Kings in January, Carnival in February, the re-enactment of the conquest of Gaucin by the French in the Napoleonic wars in March, The running of the bulls on Easter Sunday in April; Artists Open Studios the last 2 weekends of May, the bonfire of St. John in June, the flamenco festival end of July, the fair in August, the Novena and processions of the Santo Niño in September. There are monthly markets with crafts and local food. Gaucin is also ideally located to make excursions throughout Andalucia.
