As described in The Rough Guide to Tuscany, Lucca is the most graceful of Tuscany's provincial capitals, set inside a ring of Renaissance walls fronted by gardens and huge bastions. It's quiet without being dull, absorbs its tourists with ease, has a peaceful self-contained centre and offers a range of good restaurants. Inside the city walls the centre is relatively free of traffic, as many locals use bicycles to get around and it is cheap and easy to hire bikes to explore the 4km circuit of wide, tree-lined walls. There are many historical buildings including the Cathedral, Torre Guinigi and many churches to explore. The Anfiteatro is made up mainly of medieval buildings incorporates elements of the Roman amphiteatre and is the perfect spot to sit with a drink and people watch.
Lucca is an ideal base for visiting Florence, Pisa, or walking in the Garfagnana. The seaside resort of Viareggio is 20km away with its long palm tree lined promenade and Liberty-style building frontages.
