There are many lovely walks from the doorstep of Thistlewood Byre including a visit to the nearby tearoom, gallery and spa at High Head Sculpture Valley. After a short drive enjoy a day out on the Northern Fells and on the way home take in the local hospitality of the Priest Mills Cafe at Caldbeck or the infamous 'Old Crown' with its own brewery at Hesket Newmarket. Further afield lies the historic border city of Carlisle, and market towns of Penrith, Cockermouth, Appleby and Brampton. For great days out explore Hadrians Wall, The Solway Coast and historic ports or Maryport and Whitehaven. For gardens and stately homes take a trip to nearby Hutton in the Forest or Dalemain. For keen gardeners Larch Tree Nursery near Penrith is not to be missed. It also has a great cafe and there is a gallery next door. After all this unwind in the garden and listen to the bird song, take in the heady scent and maybe spot the red squirrel!

Had a great time

Review Submitted: August 31, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We just got back from a few days in this property and we had a fantastic time. It's just the right size for 2 people to retreat to. Surrounded by countryside, with the lakes not too far away, we had a great time despite the weather not really playing fair. The cottage was well equipped and the welcome was warm. We'd recommend this property to anyone.

Fantastic accommodation!

The cottage is absolutely gorgeous; very homely yet modern and attractively decorated. The welcome package was very much appreciated (bread, eggs, milk, white wine and scones) and the Molton Brown toiletries made us feel very special! We would definitely stay here again and recommend to anyone. Diane was very friendly and offered to help in any way she could. Gorgeous cottage, perfect location and good weather made our stay in the UK better than we could've imagined.

Perfect place for a great week away!

We had a great weeks stay at this lovely little property, it's location is beautiful! The byre provided everything we needed to have a perfect stay, and the welcome pack was a really nice touch. Everything was clean and maintained to a very high standard, and I would definitely recommend Thistlewood to anyone as a lovely break from the normal hectic day to day routine. The owners of the property were there to meet us when we arrived, and even throughout the week, the neighbours recommended great places to eat and drink, and also some lovely walks and bike rides to do directly from the byre, they also have a walking party some weekends so if you're lucky it's like a bit of a guided tour of the area! The Crown Inn which is signposted on the way to the byre does a fantastic 3 course sunday lunch which is great value, but make sure you get there before 2pm as they stop serving food then until 7pm in the evening. Ideally a pub a little bit closer would have been an added bonus but with the byre's garden being as nice as it is, it's just as pleasant to get back to the byre and have a glass of wine in the graden there! We thought Thistlewood byre was great value for the standard of the accomodation and we would definitely consider returning in the future. Thanks again for a great week!

Exquisite cottage, friendly people

califax Newcastle, Tyne&Wear
Review Submitted: May 18, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
This cottage is the perfect weekend getaway. It is decorated with much taste and has any equipment one might need. Particularly, the kitchen is at a high standard. The hosts are very friendly; upon arrival, we found a set table for afternoon tea, complete with home-made scones and jam, and fresh flowers.
We were greeted by a nice bottle of wine, local eggs and bread and Diane's nice smile.
The cottage was very clean when we arrived, and the furniture and interior is kept in very good condition. Towels and linen are luxurious, and we found shampoo + soap for the forgetful traveller, much to our delight.
The cottage is part of an old rural courtyard which has been refurbished recently and with attention to the details. The garden garden behind the house -- which also has a table and chairs -- is very nice and looks quite mediterranean.

With a car, the lakes and Carlisle and Penrith are just a short ride away. For those having to rely on public transport or their feet, this cottage might be a bit remote, however. But this also means that there is no noise from through roads.
We didn't have time to check out the local pub, this is on the to-do list for a hopefully soon next visit.

The only negative point is that we had to return back home so soon! Oh yes, also one ceiling spot light in the bedroom wasn't working. Isn't it great if a broken light bulb is the only thing you can complain about (Especially when there are others so you don't really need it)?
If the fireplace had been a real one instead of an electrical lookalike, we wouldn't have returned the keys to the house at all!
