Lone Oak and The Tallet are self-catering holiday units for families or couples, situated on our beef farm in Somerset. Lone Oak is ground floor accommodation, suitable for guests who may need additional support when walking; it has three bedrooms, a large kitchen, a sitting room, and open views over our fields from the back bedroom. You may see rabbits or a buzzard, and our cows and calves will come to the fence when they are grazing that field! The Tallet was originally the hay loft and wash room for the Georgian Farmhouse; it was converted in 1995 into a holiday home, keeping the flagstone floor and the original stone staircase. It has a double room and a bunk bedroom; downstairs is open plan. Guests staying in both cottages have use of the swimming pool and childrens play equipment in the back garden of the farmhouse. The pool is open in June, July and August. You can also walk or picnic along the banks of the River Brue where you may see badgers or a kingfisher.

Castle Cary is a small and very pretty market town with many independent shops and architecture. There are several National Trust properties nearby, including the spectacular gardens at Stourhead, and Montacute House where 'Sense and Sensibility' was filmed. The caves at Cheddar and Wookey Hole are also only 20 minutes away. Other attractions nearby are: Glastonbury, with its Tor and Abbey, Wells Cathedral, Haynes Motor Museum, Yeovilton Air Museum and Longleat. Walkers will appreciate the Mendip Hills and the Somerset levels (traditional basket making and R.S.P.B. reserve. For those who need some 'retail therapy' explore the Street factory shops, Antique shops in Castle Cary and Honiton, or the cities of Bath, Bristol and Salisbury.

Wonderful week spent at the Tallet!

We have just spent a week at the Tallet and have to say it was a wonderful week. Not only was the cottage just as described but we would say it was better. The warm, friendly, but not intrusive hospitality throughout our stay was wonderful, (and the home made cake on arrival is a lovely welcome) For self catering the facilities and thoughtfulness was fantastic. Our two girls just loved the cottage and all that came with it, in particular the chickens! We are planning a return trip for next year as there is still so much for us to do and see. We visited Wells, Glastonbury and Longleat this time but have plans for many more adventures next year! A true Gem, Thank you so much!

Very happy fortnight

Would recommend the Tallet very highly. Very nice welcome of tea and cake. The children (8 and 6) loved feeding the chickens and thought it hysterically funny when a cow stuck its head over the wall to look at them in the swimming pool.

Castle Cary is about 10 minutes drive away and has a good range of local shops (the Co-op does a very nice range of Fairtrade wine) and it is relatively off the beaten tourist track. It is not too far from the A303 and the station has a few through trains to London / West Country and Bristol / Weymouth. There are a good number of NT properties reasonably close by. There is a wonderful Chinese takeaway in Bruton and we had a superb meal in a local pub (the name of which we have forgotten) - on the B3153 halfway to Lydford on Fosse.

On asking the kids how many stars they thought I should click they said 'loads' and 'are we going again?'.

Cute, cosy and full of character...

The Tallet is a beautiful, traditional cottage with lots of original features. It's well furnished and seems to have everything one would require during a stay. The main bedroom is large, airy and very comfortable. The second bedroom is small but sufficient for children, or adults for a shorter stay. The ground floor is open plan which was wonderful for us and the back door opens onto an enclosed garden, safe and secure for children to play in. The swimming pool is accessible from the garden but fenced off so again perfectly safe.

The cottage was perfect for us and our three young children. We felt very welcome upon our arrival. The fresh milk and homemade cake was a big hit. Our eldest two loved feeding the chickens just outside the cottage. Collecting the eggs at the end of our day was the perfect carrot to get the kids home again after their exciting days out. The location is beautiful, very peaceful. The farm is a working farm so you do hear the cows frequently, but it adds to the charm!

The nearby town of Castleclay has plenty of small shops and you'd be able to get almost anything there I'm sure but if you wanted bigger supermarkets they are also available pretty nearby.

This time we only stayed for three nights but we were so surprised by just how much to do in the area that we are already planning a longer trip later in the year.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience in The Tallet at Clanville Manor - give it a go, I'm sure you will too!
