The Garfagnana area ,nestling between the magnificent jagged ‘marble mountains’ of the Alpi Apuane and the beautiful rolling ‘spine of Italy’, the Apennines, it is truly an area of outstanding natural beauty ,where there are many traces of medieval civilization such as fortress of Le Verrucole and castles (Castiglione di Garfagnana). The historical and architectural heritage is remarkable: ancient burgs, Romanesque parish churches, hermitages, castles and strongholds, bridges and mills .
Not too far from Il Casale dei Marini there is the Alpi Apuane Park where Michelangelo obtained the marble for some of his most famous works, and the National Park Orecchiella , still full of wolves, deer, bears and some excellent walks along the mountain tracks.
Driving through Garfagnana’s quiet roads you quickly discover that the little villages spread around the mountains are vibrantly full of local traditions and great cuisine.
