La Porche is a rustic farm building which has been converted into a well-equipped modern house, while retaining the character of its stone walls and rough timber beams. Our 1.7 hectare property borders a river with oak wood, an equestrian centre and an organic 'cevenol sweet onion' farm. La Porche is next to the house we live in, but is completely private with its own swimming pool, terrace and entrance. The house accommodates up to seven people. Upstairs are 2 large bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with 3 singles. Downstairs is a kitchen / dining room and a sitting room with a double sofa-bed, TV, DVD player and music system. There are two modern bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs. Outside is a delightful terrace, with barbecue and table and chairs, which catches the early sun but is shaded by trees from mid-day onwards. A few steps down is your private swimming pool. La Porche has central heating, making it a good choice for a winter break.

Nearest major towns are Montpelier, Nimes, Millau. *Markets - Nearest town is Le Vigan with an excellent lively market every Saturday. Ganges, a 30 min drive, has one of the best local markets every Friday morning. *Local produce - is excellent, much of it farmed organically. The four products for which the Cevennes are famous are sweet onions, apples, chestnuts and goat cheese. *Natural history - The Cevennes National Park is designated by UNESCO as a world heritage biosphere reserve. *Walking - The Cevennes has the highest concentration of GR (Grande Randonnée, long distance walks) in the whole of France, and these routes are clearly marked and sign-posted. *Swimming - Apart from your own private 8x3m pool, there are many superb river spots. Choose from the Arre, Herault, Dourbie, Jonte and Tarn. *Horse riding - We are right next to a friendly and well-run riding centre. *Cycling - We are both keen cyclists, and first discovered this area on our bikes.

Our stay at La Porche was about re-charging our city-weary batteries whilst getting a taste of the French village lifestyle. The photos and description of the property set our expectations high and La Porche delivered! The cottage is modern, well maintained and spotless when we arrived. We were travelling with a 12-month old child and the downstairs area was plenty big enough and safe enough for her to amuse herself happily. The owners were eager to make our stay as comfortable and fulfilling as possible and we very much enjoyed their tips for what to do and see in the region. Despite the weather being cool in early April, we spent a good amount of time enjoying the local wine and pastries on the sun-kissed porch. We spent our time taking walks through the local hills and villages and we found many gorgeous swimming/picnic spots along the nearby river (though it was a little too cold for us to swim that time of year). We particularly enjoyed our visit to Gange markets and a day in the Montpellier for shopping. One disadvantage of travelling in early April (shoulder season) in the region was that the local village restaurants tended not to be open. We were sad to miss them, but were not short on delicious local produce to cook in the cottage kitchen. We did not have bikes with us, so it was very useful to have a car. If we weren't travelling with an infant we may have made more of the opportunities for biking and hiking adventures, but as it was we were happy with strolling in the local hills. All-in-all a very relaxing and rejuvenating stay - we'd love to return in the warmer months with our swimmers and for some more serious hikes.
