'Les Bruyeres' has many original features including a beamed ceiling and tiled floors. It has a large fireplace with a wood stove in the living room and benefits from central heating, modern plumbing and wiring. This cottage is ideal for those looking for a tranquil holiday since the house is surrounded by an acre of ground. The English and French speaking owners live 200m away, close enough to give advice if required, but far enough away not to intrude.

Moutiers en Auge is well situated for visits to the beach (1 hr drive), Bayeux with its tapestry (1hr 15), Falaise castle - the birthplace of William the Conqueror (20 mins), Caen the regional centre (45 mins) and beautiful gothic cathedrals at Sees (40mins) and Chartres (2 ½ hrs). There are rail connections to Paris (2hrs) from the nearby towns of Argentan and Lisieux. Lisieux is a well known religious centre celebrating St Therese. Camembert is nearby and there are many farms selling superb local produce in the locality. Everyday shopping needs are provided by the small town of Trun 10 minutes away. There are important World War II sites and museums in the area whilst those who enjoy walking and cycling will find plenty of trails.

Additional information about rental rates

  • At time of booking 100% of the fee is due.
    Cancellation arrangements:
    If you cancel up to 4 weeks before your stay we will refund 100% of the sum.
    If you cancel within 2 weeks of your stay we will refund 50% of the sum and if you cancel within 1 week we will be unable to provide a refund.
    We strongly recommend that you arrange your own travel insurance.
  • The first basket of wood is included, baskets of wood there after will be charged at 1 pound per basket (a basket of wood will last approximately 1-2 nights).
    The house is warm, but if the central heating is required there will be a charge of 5 pounds/day to cover the cost of fuel. Hot water is provided by an electric immersion heater - this is included in the cost.

  • The plumbing in the cottage was completely upgraded to modern standards four years ago.

Garden: The cottage stands in over an acre of land, including gardens, a grass area for games, a pond, and a small nature reserve. These are exciting areas for children to explore however children must be supervised! There are other barns on the site which are secure but not available for use. There is a bricked terrace barbecue area which is a lovely sun trap.

Surroundings and access: The plot is surrounded by fields used for pasture. Access is via a small, quiet country lane.

if you are looking for a lovely, peaceful, clean, and relatively close to beautiful places to explore, this would be the place to stay! The inside of the cottage looked traditional and is a lot more spacious than we expected. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen and exploring the gardens. We definitely enjoyed our stay in the cottage, driving around Normandy, and would highly recommend this property to friends!

We made a late booking for 3 nights in October 2009 and couldn't have found a nicer place for a restful "away-from-it-all" stay. The cottage is exactly as described - comfortable and full of charm. The wood-burning stove was brilliant and we made good use of the bikes to explore the quiet country lanes and villages nearby. The owners were helpful and thoughtful, giving lots of detailed information on places to visit,etc. We certainly want to book again next year.

Relaxing rural experience

We spent four nights in this charming cottage in the rural countryside of Calvados. The cottage and its grounds provided us with a real tase of life in rural France. The cottage adequately catered for all of our needs. Our favourite feature was the wood burning stove. The grounds were beautiful and teaming with bird song and wildlife. A short walk from the cottage reinforced the rural experience. Yet it was not miles away from local amenities: a short car ride took us to nearby towns where we could purchase our food and relax in cafes. The owners were polite, friendly and helpful. We shall be sure to return again.
