Fontvallet is set on a hillside in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail, with wonderful views of the valley and mountains. 1.4 hectares of land surrounds the house, with pines, oaks and olives, and gives almost total privacy to the house, pool and terraces. Most of the land is on a slope, and makes for some interesting exploring. The inside of the house was remodeled with an emphasis on light, and much of the furniture individually designed and hand made. The living and dining areas are combined, and the kitchen separate. The two double, twin (sloping ceilings)and single room will accommodate up tp 4 adults and three children, but a smaller family or couple will also feel at home. The house is welcoming, comfortable and well-equipped. There is a choice of places to eat and lounge on the terraces, and the pool (alarm, no fence) is within a few metres, allowing easy supervision of children. There are walks directly from the house, Beaumes de Venise is 3.5 km, and Avignon 1/2 ho.

Immediately around the house are the Dentelles de Montmirail, small limestone mountains with high jagged points, which give spectacular views and very interesting walking. The brave can also go in for rock-climbing, and the less brave watch through binoculars from the terrace. Beaumes de Venise (3.5kms) is your nearest village for shops, and it and other local villages such as Gigondas, Vacqueraas, Malaucene and Caromb (there are plenty more) are all worth visiting for their individual character, markets and excellent wine.Further than the villages lie two local towns, Vaison la Romaine and Carpentras, with contrasting character.Vaison has spectacular Roman remains, and is always lively, whilst Carpentras is somewhat but with plenty of interest. Further away again lie the honeypot towns of Provence, Avignon about 1/2 hour, then Orange, Nimes, Arles and Aix-en-Provence. East, the countryside becomes higher and wilder, with Mont Ventoux, at 6000ft, a superb destination for days out.

  • CURRENCY- rentals can be paid in Euros by agreement, at the exchange rate on the date of payment.
    PAYMENT - 30% of rental payable on booking, and remainder to be received six clear weeks ahead of start date. For bookings made less than 1 month before start date full payment on booking.

    DAMAGE DEPOSIT - £500 cheque or credit card number required, but will not be cashed except by agreement after the rental if needed.

    CANCELLATION:

    By clients
    Up to 1 month before start of rental - deposit only. Less than 1 month before start of rental, full amount. Clients are advised to have travel insurance which will pay for this in the event of an insurable risk.

    By owner
    (Only in dire case of serious illness or severe damage to house). All payments will be returned, and help given to secure an equivalent holiday.
  • NUMBERS IN PROPERTY
    In periods O and A prices are for 2/3 people. A supplement will be payable fpr larger parteis.
    In periods B and C prices are for up to 5 people. Discounts for lower numbers may be given, but only as late special offers ( within three weeks of start date).
    In periods D and E prices are for up to 7 people, including no more than 4 adults. (adults defined as people of 16 or over).

    WHAT IS INCLUDED
    Gas, water and electricity. There will be a supplement for central heating from November 1st to end April, and in October. THere is masses of free firewood.

    Weekly cleaning, and change of linen. Bed, kitchenl linen and personal towels are supplied. Pool towels are not available. Weekly attention to the pool, and visits by a gardener as appropriate.

This place is lovely. the house is beautiful: the main bedroom has terrace doors leading to a breakfast terrace a few paces from the pool. The pool has easy access roman steps and a hand rail for the less sure footed. The main living/dining room (although you'll be eating on the terrace) is airy and cool, and the kitchen is spacious and well equipped. The main terrace is spacious and has shade (awning) when you need it - it is sunny late morning to the end of the day - and has the most fabulous view. The upstairs bedroom has its own terrace with the same wonderful view over the valley. The attic room has lots of space if you need it. The area is stuffed full of history and culture - Avignon,Orange, Nimes - and of course, outstanding wine - Chateau Neuf Du Pape is about 20 minuts away, and Vaqueras and Gigondas even nearer. There is also a surprising amount for children in the vicinity (crocodile farm, model village, pagentry displays in Beau de Provence, ruins to climb over in Orange, Mont Ventoux to explore..), and would really recommend this place to families with children above about 3.

I stayed in this property last year. The house is immaculate and very comfortable. The housekeeper who comes in once a week is efficient, friendly and helpful, and the location is second to none. The village is a walkable distance, but better by car if you need to carry shopping, and offers everything necessary to sustain life in a charming, friendly and relaxed rural seting. The surrounding countryside is stunning and varied, ideal for small scale exploration on foot and larger scale exploration by car. The wine producers cellars are a constant delight, and there is a marvelloous choice of places to eat within easy reach; even Avignon is close enough if you want to mix a bit of culture with your hedonism.

I would recommend this property to anyone who appreciates peace and tranquillity, cares passionately about the outlook of their holiday accommodation and enjoys Provencal landscape, architecture, food and drink. However, you do need a car and, although some teenagers would find plenty to do in the area, many would feel frustrated by the absence of an urban, resort-style nightlife.
