Hydra is possibly one of the most exquisite islands in Greece. A great deal of its charm is derived from its lack of motorised vehicles. Only donkeys and humans traverse this lacework of whitewashed paths. All constructions must be built to fit in with existing old buildings and nothing is rushed. This is the ideal island to jump off the fast lane onto a well deserved amble through Greek life. The main town cascades down form the top of the island like an amphitheatre creating a dramatic feel to the harbour. The 'Friday rush' is when fishing boats jostle with yachts to find a birth for the weekend. Some aspects of the island transport one back in time to the 1800's while other aspects such as chic shops and art galleries bring you up to date with the cosmopolitan. There are famous names with houses here and famous faces sit drinking coffee on the harbour front. But Hydra has a way of making the famous invisible and putting the donkey man centre stage.
