Barmouth is the premier traditional seaside town in this part of southern Snowdonia, with a good selection of pubs, restaurants, and everything you would expect in a traditional seaside resort. Backed by jagged crags, fronted with ash blonde sandy beaches that stretch for miles, and all against the wonderful backdrop of the Mawddach estuary. This is a great area for exploring everything from deserted mountain vistas, to deep underground former slate quarries for which this area was renowned, even former gold mines can be found here, or laze away the day on the endless sandy beaches. Further north takes you to Harlech with its golf course and imposing castle, and further north is Portmeirion village, a must see attraction, famous as the setting for a cult 60s TV series The Prisoner. Porthmadog has a good selection of supermarkets if in need of some retail therapy.
