Photos and Description of this County Cork holiday cottage Two bedroom cottage sensitively renovated by an English architect.

The Well at Gurteenulla is a little gem, set in its own grounds in the heart of the Irish countryside. A romantic little idyll for anyone who wants to get away from everything and enjoy peace and nature. A sensitively renovated and modernised traditional farmhouse it retains a lot of its original character and yet has the comfort and facilities of the current century. Central heated, it has two bedrooms, a bathroom on the top storey and then airy, spacious open plan living and dining downstairs. There is a separate, small but more than adequate kitchen. There is a pleasant stone terrace and a summer dining room which makes a delightful eating area on evenings that are too chill for al fresco dining. The garden is large and rambling. The lawns are well kept but the grounds unmanicured. It is secluded, with maximum privacy.

The Well at Gurteenulla is two miles north of Ballydehob village. Easily located just of the main national routeway, the N71. Although set in the heart of the countryside the cottage is well placed to access the rest of the glorious Mizen Peninsula with its beautiful, rugged scenery, characterful villages and the surrounding Atlantic Ocean. One and half miles from a main road artery a driver will find this a useful base for touring, north to Bantry, Killarney and beyond, or back towards the east, to Skibbereen and Cork. Farmland and hillside surround this quiet cottage where the only noise is the sound of singing birds and if the breeze is easterly, Biddy, at a nearby farm calling her cattle. Although secluded, the property is neither remote or isolated with neighbours close by, but unseen. From the upper storey and the belvedere for the more intrepid there is a view way across countryside to Spain Tower on the hill at Baltimore and a mere glimpse of the sea.

Notes: To the left side of the house but not accessible from there is a summer dining room. Overlooking the garden, it makes a pleasant place to eat if it is too chill for al fresco dining. The garden is large, lawned with a variety of shrubs. The grass is mown but some areas are quite wild and it has many little nooks and crannies to make it more interesting. Leading from the tarred road, Gurteenulla is at the end of a rough winding lane, overhung with fuchsia. A traditional farmhouse the layout and structure echoes its past. Parking is on a large gravelled area beside the house. At the back of the property is a small, maturing orchard and a wild herb garden, beyond this is a rough hill and for the energetic at the top is a 'belvedere' with a panorama of the surrounding countryside. A place set amongst bracken and gorse which captures the evening sun and is delightful place to enjoy a drink and watch the sun sink away to the west.

The perfect base to explore West Cork

Elmbank London
Review Submitted: September 23, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
Gurteenulla is a 'gem', the property is secluded and private, ideal if you want to get away from it all. It's a great base from which to explore West Cork by car or bike. The small farmhouse is clean, tastefully decorated and the perfect size for a couple or small family. The garden is brimming with wonderful plants and the location a bit off the beaten track - my daughter and I loved it.

The owner was particularly helpful and provided additional information with regards to fishing in the area - I would certainly recommend Gurteenulla and look forward to staying there again.
