Dartmouth deserves its reputation as the jewel in the crown of the South Hams region. It is popular all year round with families and in particular is famed for its sailing and water sports. Dartmouth is a deepwater port and the home of the Brittania Royal Naval college. The Regatta which takes place during August each year is a huge event featuring the Red arrows. Nearby are beaches of Slapton and the award winning Blackpool sands, regularly rated one of the best beaches in the UK. This area ofSouth Devon is blessed with a mild climate and Christmas and New Year are especally popular as Dartmouth celebrates New Year in style with a huge fancy dress extravaganza that is regularly televised. The Town was featured in TVs Onedin line and looks much the same as it did two centuries ago. A stroll around Dartmouth, overlooked by Dartmouth castle, is very atmospheric with narrow, cobbled streets and 17th century timber framed buildings. Dartmouth is the prettiest harbour town in Europe.
