Excellent base for walkers

Bob and I were the very first guests to use this villa, and found it very modern and stylish. It was well equipped and clean, and had most of the facilities needed to make our stay enjoyable. Best of all though, were the fabulous views which are enjoyed through all the full-width, floor to ceiling windows at the front.
The booking arrangements were simple and well-organised, and clear directions were given as to how to find and access the villa. The owner Elisabete left us a welcome bottle of wine.
Next door is a little local bar, where the english-speaking owners, Sr. Jose and D. Fatima will give you a warm welcome.(And a great cup of coffee and slice of home-made cake!) We enjoyed a pleasant evening with the locals watching Portugal play football, interspersed by some lively singing in the bar!
Walkers - you're able to access the fantastic Pico Ruivo and Caldeiro Verde walks with a drive through Santana, or you can scramble up Eagle Rock or walk the levadas on the doorstep, without a car. I think the buses are fairly regular, although we didn't use them.
We were fortunate to happen upon the 500 year celebration of the discovery of Madeira whilst in Machico - what a treat! Most of the local school-children, and many adults were in mediaeval costume, and the streets around the fort were set up with stalls of traditional crafts, foods, and all manner of activities from dancing to sword-fights, and performances by jesters, acrobats and singers took place. Even without this, Machico is worth a look as a pleasant resort, with a golden sandy beach.
We cooked for ourselves in the evening, so can't recommend any restaurants, but there are big supermarkets in Santana (Sa) or Machico (Pingo Doce).
We certainly had a fantastic holiday, and I would recommend this as a base for anyone wishing to visit the north-east of Madira.
