Taunton holiday castle

The manor origins date back to 1235 when Bishop Joceline of Wells exempted a Knight of Wellington from paying hay taxes. The property then underwent a major building programme with wings being added at both north and south ends, replacing the solars. The spiral staircases were enclosed and the whole was reconstructed in Tudor style. In 1695 the house was sold to Sir John Ewell of Exeter. One of Sir John's grandsons was Aide to the Duke of Wellington at Waterloo (the Duke took his name from our town, his monument is on the hill to the south west of the house).

On the ground floor is the fully equipped kitchen (with scullery) that leads on to the formal banqueting hall. The living room has a separate TV room next to it. Also on this floor is the gun room, the pool room, 2 WCs, a sauna and a twin bedroom. On the first floor there are 8 double bedrooms and 6 bath or shower rooms. On the second floor there are 3 interconnecting bedrooms (a double, a triple & a single) with an additional bathroom. The estate covers seven acres and includes a superb miniature lake in the grounds with a koi pond, formal gardens, lawns, and woodland. The facilities within the grounds include an on-site sauna, heated outdoor swimming pool and croquet lawn.
