In the valley of the Casentino ( the “enclosed valley”), where Dante Alighieri lived wrote and fought , lies the source of the Arno. Overlooked by the forests and mountains of the National Park, Poppi Castle commands a central position and holds an impressive collection of 25,000 books and manuscripts. Ancient castles and churches and monasteries including the monasteries of St Eremo and La Verna worth visiting. At Camaldoli the pharmacy of the monks where one can buy local products and walk in the cool fresh air of the sweet chestnut trees. Fairs and festivals all year round eg the Epiphany celebrations in Florence( Jan ), the Gusto dei Guidi wine festival in Poppi, the Chestnut Festival in the Etruscan village of Talla, the Giostra di Saraceno and antiques fair every month in Arezzo, and small village celebrations and fireworks all summer in the valley.
