Spacious converted farmhouse of over 190m2 with private 10m x 5m pool. The property rests in the tiny village of La Taychel in the heart of the Ariege. Sitting on gardens of an acre with a well stocked river bounding the property on one side. The large garden has many mature trees offering dappled shade and outdoor dining. Feel free to enjoy our boules court, recently installed. Inside the property is equipped with a full kitchen. There are 2 bedrooms each with a double bed, with a further two mezzanine bedrooms one with 2 twin beds and the second with 2 doubles. There is one master bathroom with bath, shower, toilet. A second shower room with toilet sink, and a down stairs WC. The property has large open plan sitting-dining area leading to large gardens through French doors. TV area with TV and DVD player, no TV signal. On site washing machine, Freezer, Fridge, Dishwasher all new.

Inside the quadrant formed by the larger towns of Medieval Mirepoix, Pamier, Foix and Lavlenat, nestles peaceful Taychel. Equidistant from Toulouse and Carcassonne airports at 63km. This is Pays Cathare, the land of the Cathars. With Chateau Montsegeur only 15 min drive. Monday market in Mirepoix is a must see as is Friday in Foix. Both of these beautiful French towns have much to offer within easy drive. The ariege has many walks and cycle tracks for families to enjoy, and may interesting excursion available, Pre-historic caves, underground rivers, medieval jousting at Nearby Chalabre, take a boat out on Lac Bel, Climb to the dizzy heights of Chateau Montsegeur, Visit the natural Labyrinth at Nebias. Gourmet night in Lehran is a great experience of French country life where the mayor provides the seating and the Chief, and you buy the produce from the market to be cooked and enjoyed there and then.

Places to See: Mirepoix, Medieval town with wonderful market on Monday mornings, great selection of cafes and restaurants to choose from. 20 Min. Carcassonne medieval walled cite is a great day trip with shops, guided tours, walks of the city walls, and some very good places to eat. 1 hr. Foix castle is worth a visit after a hard days walking the cobbled streets and enjoying the Friday market. 20 min. Lac Bel has wonderful walks, boat rentals, sand beach, Horse and donkey rentals. 15 min. Chalabre with its authentic chateau and an all day medieval show, including weapons training with bow and arrow, jousting, and plenty of activities for the children. 15 min drive. If the 10m pool is not enough water for you, you can take the drive to the mediterranean beaches of Perpignan and also visit the drive through Safari north of the city at Sigean. 1 hr 40. Take the train from Pamier up through the beautiful Pyrenees and into Andorra, then onward on an amazing journey into Spain and Barcelona. 1 day.

Things to Do: Walking tracks dot the entire region with something for every level, child friendly family circuits up to all day mountainous stages of the Cathar way. White water rafting is available within easy reach if you are feeling a bit adventurous. Beside Aix-Les-Thermes. Or perhaps a little Sky diving at Pujol drop zone only 20 min from Taychel. There are a number of horse and Donkey trekking trips available in the region if you would like to explore the mountains on 4 legs. Try your luck at high speed go Kart racing 10 mins from the house if the children get bored of the sun and swimming. Wander into the local snail farm, 5 minutes walk form the centre of the village and treat yourself to a kilo of Escargot.

A great family getaway....

We stayed here September '08. We have two young children between 2 and 4. We flew in to Carcassonne airport which is quite small so it’s just a quick stroll to the car rental and another 10 metres and you are on the road immediately which is a pleasant change from the usual large airport underground car park and striving to find all the ring exits.
We stayed on the secondary road and avoided motorways as it’s a very pleasant journey through beautiful country side for less than an hour. The house itself was a wonderful surprise. The kitchen and living area is a lovely open space. The kitchen is well equipped obviously by someone who likes to cook. Above there are two more levels. The first floor has 3 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and a sitting area. The large back bedroom is a lovely room with shuttered windows overlooking the garden
The uppermost is very nicely converted attic style. It would have been ideal for children older than ours.
The house was decorated in a homely meets rustic style and while the adults were immediately chilled out after the journey the kids set about exploring all the kiddie stuff lurking under the stairs. It was a great relief to see more than enough to keep them occupied for at least a week.
The garden was special, beautiful trees with a lovely pool. We regularly strung the hammocks between the trees and took turns watching the kids in the pool. The pool also has a great childproof cover.
There are many beautiful places to visit from Carcassonne itself to the last stand of the Cathars in Montsegur. Our biggest venture was a round trip to the beach at Leucate Plage followed by a great trip to the African plains safari park at Sigean. It was probably 1.5 hours each way driving but it was worth it.
There are some lovely towns in the area. Our two favourites were Mirepoix and Foix. The castle in Foix is well worth a look. We also enjoyed a Moroccan restaurant there but its name eludes me. In Mirepoix the market on Monday is amazing. It is a dazzling selection of fresh fruit, vegetables, cheeses, wines, meats, etc. It was difficult to know where to start but we managed. We cooked at the house regularly but also ate out in some lovely restaurants none better than Le Comptoir Gourmand where we had some wonderful cassoulet.
Normally while on holiday we use the accommodation as a base and spend most of the time elsewhere. This house is the sort of place where you might forget you have a rental car; it’s simply a very nice place to be.

une bonne vacance

My wife and I stayed here in September '07 along with our two children and their grandparents, the house is of ample size for 4 adults and several children.
The farmhouse has all mod cons and the decor and styling are top class. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is an outdoor barbecue. There are books and children's games aplenty, if you can keep them out of the pool long enough, incidentally the pool has a slide over roof which is very secure.
There is plenty of parking behind the house, we had two rental cars which we kept in the shade at the rear of the house.

The town of Larouqe is a few minutes way and there is an excellent butchers and boulangerie in the shopping center, theres a large super marche at the other end of the town.

There are plenty of tourist activities in the local region, we spent a day the prehistoric park, another day in the cave system at Foix, a day Carcassone visiting the old city and hill fort. We spend an evening in Foix where they run a live legend of the Cathars play at the base of the castle, the kids were engrossed with the live action Knights and Horses.

One evening we went to a fete in a nearby village, my in-laws who are avid ballroom dancers, joined the locals on the dance floor for a couple of quicksteps and trots. I can highly recommend the restaurant Les Sapiens on the back road from Lavelenet to Foix, you'll need to book a couple of days before hand. My wife and I regard it as one of the best meals we've ever had and quite reasonably priced for such high quality.



All in we had a great time.
