Villa Shanduca is an imposing property completed in 2008 set amongst olive groves and surrounded by wonderful views to Souda Bay and the white mountains. The villa is within walking distance of Plaka Square with a good choice of tavernas, bars and shops. A 5 minute drive to Almyrida finds a seaside village with a pleasant shallow beach nestling in the bay of Souda. The blue flag beach offers an impressive choice of activity including windsurfing and general watersports. A full width balcony provides fabulous day and night time views. The BBQ hut is a real hit with all guests. Although ideally located as a base for touring the diverse countryside, the villa and grounds offer a great incentive to stay put and relax by the pool and 'do nothing'.

There are great beaches around the entire coast but only 10 minutes in 1 direction, Kokkino Chorio is ideal for snorkelling and popular with the locals. Almyrida is just below Plaka and has a small beach, sailing and kayaking. A little further along the coast is Kalyvis a traditional village with a great beach for the kids. For the day tripper Falasarna on the west coast has a nice long beach with beautiful water voted 2nd cleanest in Greece. A water park and Go-Karting track at Omalous is great for the kids but if you want scenery and a challenge then visit Samaria Gorge which meanders down a pretty trail for 18km. Archaeological sites are in abundance. Two tavernas are situated between the villa and Plaka Square. One of these - Totem's is a popular watering hole with spectacular views across Souda Bay. Plaka square is popular and includes two small supermarkets, several tavernas and free internet access. Takis Bar shows all Sky Sports events if you want to view main events.

  • Please check availability with the owner before booking flights. All prices from April to October include a welcome pack, weekly maid service, air conditioning and all utility bills. A deposit of £100 per week is payable upon booking. The balance is due 8 weeks prior to departure and payment is accepted in pounds or Euros. A refundable security deposit of £100 is also payable at this time. A high chair, cot and baby bath can be hired for a nominal weekly charge-please request details.

    Prices are for the property per week in UK Pounds although we can quickly supply a conversion to Euros. A 10% price reduction will be applied to week 2 of any booking. All out of season holidays are charged at £400 per week.

Notes: Majority of windows and doors have fly screens which are extremely effective during the mosquito season. Wooden shutters are surprisingly good at reducing room temperature during the warmer periods. It is reassuring to note that any property issues that may occur will be dealt with by our nearby property maintenance company.

The most convenient airport to use is Chania being no more than 30 minutes from the villa. The main flight day to Chania is Tuesday. Heraklion tends to have more flight options but means a 2 hour journey although much of the trip has breathtaking coastal views. Direct charter flights usually start early May until end of October but Olympic Airways and Aegean Airways will travel to either airport via Athens.

Perfect for lazing in luxury!

We were looking for a lovely house for a LAZY week in the sun and Shanduca was perfect for that. This newly built villa is beautifully laid out and finished and is in a quiet, convenient spot next to just four other houses [mostly empty at the time] with great usunset views across Souda Bay and the White Mountains from upstairs. The description and photos are spot on. We used the two king wize en suite bedrooms upstairs [ with full width balconies] and the two younger children shared the smaller basement room with twin beds, which also had its own bathroom and double doors to the outside, and which was lovely and cool for them. We didn't walk into Plaka, but could have! The nearest mini supermarket in Plaka, had the best selection of fresh and other produce; very handy. Almyrida was perfect for times we wanted to go away form the lovely pool. The bay is very pretty,with WARM sea and safe but fun waves for the children. The resort is just big enough to have all you need - tavernas, little shops etc; but still quaint and fairly quiet. We enjoyed a number of meals out there. Thalimis, Makis and Psaros to name three. Prices were reasonable and the staff friendly and helpful. We can recommend the 'Dream Adventures' RIB boat trip with snorkelling - book on the seafront. Not for younger children who can't swim, probably, but we loved it [our children are 8, 12 and 13]. We met the couple who look after the property for the owners, who were lovely, and very quick to respond to a minor request we had. We flew to and from Heraklion, 2 hours away so not the closest airport but the journey was easy, and we could then visit Knossos on the way back, which was worthwhile doing. We would definitely stay at this villa again, and would recommend it thoroughly to anybody wanting a high standard of villa and pool for a lazy holiday in a beautiful spot with a delightful small beach resort within a few minutes drive. It's lovely!

Excellent sunner retreat

We rented Villa Shanduca for ten days during the early part of August 2009 having flown in to Heraklion with Easyjet. As a family with two teenagers, we were delighted with the overall high standard of equipment and exceptional quality of this property. There was nothing more than we could have wanted - even down to the provision of a quality speaker system for my daughter's ipod! The comfortable large beds, effective air-conditioning and mosquito screens meant we were always up fresh and early for the pool, and the evening sunsets overlooking Sauda Bay were magnificent. A timely mid-week visit from the pool maintenance company to clean, chlorinate and check the pool was most welcome.
The owner provided fast, efficient responses to our emails with excellent driving instructions.
Genuinely cannot fault this property and have already recommended to a work colleague.

Wonderful Villa Shanduca and we are all missing it, the pool, the wonderful showers in the en-suite wet-rooms, the stars, the sunsets and of course the sunny weather. A great base to explore western Crete, a car is a must to make the most of this area of Crete, This detached villa is set in a small development of 5 villas and has a great away from it all ambiance but only a very short drive to Plaka with Tavernas mini markets and only a short drive on to Almerida beach more tavernas bakeries water sports. We did a couple of trips to Chania and visited Rethynmon, Argyroupoli village (prettiest village in Western Crete, a visit to the springs and wonderful Tavernas is highly recommended) Aptera's roman ruins and Turkish fort. We still had plenty of time to lounge around the pool and enjoy the wonderful facilities of the Villa. BBQs and outdoor lifestyle is great if only we could have the same here in Scotland even for a couple of weeks a year! A great holiday was had by all.

Fantastic villa in beautiful, convenient location

We chose this villa as it was near one we rented in Kambia last summer. It looked great in the photos and as it turned out the description of the villa is spot-on. It is obviously brand new, spotlessly clean, well furnished and there are all the facilities you could ever need on holiday. The BBQ hut is a great feature and was well used by us! Everyone loved the pool which was large enough for a proper swim and was fairly warm even in May. The adults particularly loved the peace and quiet, spectacular views and sunsets over the Mountains. The village of Plaka is within walking distance, but a fairly long walk up and down hill so not for the unfit. There are supermarkets there and two excellent Tavernas serving traditional food at very reasonable prices. The beach at Almyrida is a short drive away and is great for kids with shallow warm water and plenty of places to eat and drink. We would recommend a car for the duration of the stay as there are lots of places to visit, including a very good water slide park about 40 minutes away and a visit to the old Harbour at Chania is a must. We would thoroughly recommend this property to anyone looking for a quiet break or for a family holiday as it caters for all.
