Three charmingly restored gems have just become available for holiday rental (May 2009). They sit within the 4-acre working estate of Quinta Vista Alegre where bananas and vines are grown and century-old tropical gardens are tended. Astonishingly, this oasis of tranquillity is found in the main tourist zone of Funchal, near the sea and Reids Palace Hotel. Converted from the old Billiard House, Stables and Factor’s accommodation the cottage walls are of original stone and interiors are spacious, characterful and well designed with top quality furnishings and equipment. A private, electric entrance gate leads to a shared car park and a short, cobbled driveway. Each cottage is self- contained with 1 bedroom/bathroom and an outlook of tropical fruit trees and plants. 2 have patios shaded by vines in warmer months and 2 are entirely ground-floor, ideal for those less mobile. The resident owners speak English and Portuguese. The family pool is available 09.00-17.00. Sorry, No Children.

Loja da Lenha (The Old Wood Store) has comfortable ground floor accommodation for 2 guests with a patio shaded by vines in the warmer months. The entrance opens into a well furnished living room which features original chestnut beams, one stone wall and a coffee table locally crafted from beams used in the Quinta. There is a sofa, 2 armchairs, TV with cable & UK satellite channels, broadband access and table lamps for reading. Beyond, the kitchen/diner has table/chairs for 4, an electric hob, oven, dishwasher, microwave, fridge, toaster, and kettle plus crockery/cutlery/glassware for 6 and plenty of serving/cooking/storage equipment. The bedroom can be made up with 1 large double or 2 single beds & has mahogany chest of drawers with mirror above. The en suite bathroom has a bath with shower, bidet, basin, loo and double, fitted wardrobes. The outside paved area has 4 chairs, 1 table, 1 umbrella. Linen, bath towels & weekly cleaning provided. The family pool is availlable May-Oct, 9-5.

Notes: Linen, towels and weekly cleaning are provided. A separate laundry room with washing machine, iron and ironing board is available for guests' use. There is very little crime on Madeira but each cottages is supplied with a security system. The outdoor family pool is available for guests 09.00 - 17.00 daily. The owners ask that guests sign a disclaimer when they arrive, just in case anything untoward should result from using the pool. An electric fan is provided in summer and a portable electric heater provided in winter months. There is Wi-Fi internet access in the cottages for use with your own laptop. You will have to register to obtain a password and there is a charge of 1€/24hrs or 5€/week, payable by credit card.

WITHIN WALKING DISTANCE: Opposite the entrance to Quinta Vista Alegre (where the cottages are) is the entrance to Quinta Magnolia, previously an English Club which is now Government owned. Here you can enjoy beautiful gardens and sports such as a fitness circuit, two tennis courts, a pool and an esplanade bar - all set in an area of about 40.000 square meters. Just down the road you have the oldest and possibly most prestigious hotel on the island, Reid's Palace, where they serve the famous afternoon 'Tea at Reid's' on the terrace overlooking the gardens and ocean. (Pre-booking necessary.) Nearby are other excellent hotels and a good variety of restaurants, cafés, bars, shows and concerts. You can enjoy sea swimming at the public Lido about 1 km by foot, or you may just want to walk along the coast in this area. The nearest small supermarket is less than 5 minutes' walk. Buses/taxis are close and frequent. A car is not essential but advisable to explore this beautiful island.

ABOUT QUINTA VISTA ALEGRE: The 4 acre estate of Quinta Vista Alegre has been in the Zino family for 70 years, the owners being the third generation. The main house was built around 1867. It is a working Quinta growing vines and bananas in the centre of Funchal. Much of the garden was laid out by an English family, the Stanfords, between 1902 and 1912 and Charles Thomas-Stanford wrote “Leaves from a Madeira Garden” about his garden and the island. The “Vista cottages” are in the original stone, set among the bananas and vines, having been converted from the old Billiard House and Stables and Factors accommodation.

Other Activities: Madeira is famous for its tropical gardens and its 'levada' walks which extend into the beautiful mountain areas with dramatic scenery.

As it happens, the neighbouring owners were away on holiday over the period of this booking and our taxi driver, Carlos, (who speaks perfect English) provided airport transfers, settled this couple into their cottage and was their point of contact during their stay. Ivone, the maid, is friendly and helpful but speaks only Portuguese. A comprehensive welcome handbook gives plenty of information on what is available in the local area and obviously it did its job!
