Copper Cottage in World Heritage site:
This cosy Cottage nestles in the countryside between the granite hills of Carn Brea and Carnkie in a conservation area and World Heritage Site just 5 miles from the wonderful sandy beaches of the North Cornish coast (Portreath and Porthtowan). Charming and comfortable, it is an old stone beamed cottage more than 150 years old with its own little garden in the heart of excellent walking country. The old tracks of the Great Flat Lode trail lead from the door and provide coast to coast walking, cycling and horse riding (Wheal Buller riding stable is less than 1 mile away). It is decorated and furnished to a high standard and was originally owned by the famous Cornish noblemen, the Basset family. An original wood and coal burning antique Cornish Range has been re-installed in the old beamed sitting room, where it is framed by huge granite pillars and other local stone.
Local Hills, History and Walking:
The rear of the cottage has spectacular views of Carn Brea hill where there are the old ivy-covered mine ruins of Wheal Basset and the remains of an Iron age settlement. On the top of the hill is a 16th century castle built into the granite rocks, where long ago a beacon light used to be lit upstairs to guide the ships offshore and to protect them from the treacherous seas. The hill is crowned by a granite monument which was built in 1836 to commemorate Francis Lord de Dunstanville and Basset of Tehidy. From the top of Carn Brea hill there are superb views with the North Coast and sea spread before you, the hills of St Austell in the East and West Penwith and St Ives in the West. Local walking, cycling and riding trails lead from the door of the cottage and stretch for miles into the hills and local countryside.
