Scalea is alive during the summer months. Italians have been vacationing here for years during the summer months. The population swells as people from all over swarm around to the lush beaches, fabulous food, lively street music, pubs, cheap shopping and unbelievable mountain vues
The weather is sunny, the locals very friendly and helpful, and the there are many little medieval towns close by that are worth exploring..
The ruins of Pompeii / Ercolano are a direct train ride away as well as Rome/Naples. The town of Cosenza is close by as well which has luxury shops and boutiques.
Ski:
Skiing in the Sila Mountains - About 1 and a half hours drive from Scalea are Calabria's main Ski resorts. These are in the Sila Grande which is near Cosenza (travel south on the SS18 from Scalea and follow signs for Cosenza. Then take the road into the mountains. The 3 resorts are: Camigliatello Silano 1400m, Lorica 1350-1920m, Ciricilla 1400-1500m.
