Hill House is a recently restored Burgundian stone house. Modern, yet retaining original features - Dijonnaire fireplace, flagstone flooring, beams and vaulted wine cellar. This centrally situated village house is on a hill with extensive views across the valleys. A south facing front terrace and a walled garden to the rear with a fountain, wrought iron furniture and terracotta pots. The large open planned kitchen/diner is well equipped and connects to the lounge and bedroom suites. Medieval Alise-Sainte-Reine, with its museum and Roman site, was where the Romans defeated the last of the Gauls. A statue of Vercingetorix is located at the top of the hill which is the highest point in Burgundy. Street parking. Local shops nearby in Venarey-les-Laumes with the famous Cheval Blanc Restaurant in our village where you will also find a potter and gift shops.

Nearest Ferry: Calais at 500 Kilometres
Nearest Train: Montbard (TGV) at 15 Kilometres
Nearest Motorway: Semur en Auxois at 35 Kilometres

Across the valley from Alise is Flavigny (monastery, the famous aniseed sweets, vineyard and the location for the film Chocolat) with Fontenay (Cistern Abbey, UNESCO world heritage site), Semur, Avallon and Noyers (medieval towns), Epoisse (cheese and castle), Beaune (Hotel-Dieu & wine), Chablis (wine) and Dijon (Musee des Beaux Arts, the Ducal Palace and the market on Tuesdays and Fridays) all close by. Chateaux include Bussy- Rabutin, Sully and Bazoches. Venarey les Laumes is the local town (a long walk) and here you will find two supermarkets, petrol, chemist, boulangerie, tabac, banks, coffee bars, the Wednesday market and an excellent tourism office. Near Venarey is the canal for lovely level walks, cycling and fishing. Do not forget to visit the Morvan National park with its beautiful lakes for nautical sports and Pont du Lac for swimming and sailing. Golfing is available in the impressive grounds of the Chateau de Chailly about 35 minutes away.

We had a wonderful family holiday in this beautiful house. As soon as we arrived and walked in the door we fell in love with the place! The owners have restored the house beautifully, with such attention to detail that it was a joy to stay here. Hill House has such a homely atmosphere and there is so much space that the five of us never felt on top of each other.
We took our bikes with us and the surrounding area is was great for cycling, with so many lovely medievil vilages and beautiful towns to see and the most stunning countryside.
I cannot recommend this place highly enough and suffice to say none of us wanted to leave when our week was up and we wished we had booked for longer!
