Further details for this holiday house rental on Naxos, Greece

Naxos Island: Lying at the heart of a unique group of islands at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea, Naxos is a jewel in the azure blue Aegean Sea. Huge spectacular sandy beaches, sand dunes covered in a rare cedar forest, 1000 metre mountains, lush green valleys, fertile planes, caves, rivers and fresh water springs. These are a few of the reasons that see the regular return of the informed traveler and the frequent accidental tourist. Whatever you look for in a summer break, Naxos has it all. Whether you like to laze around on beaches or tour the islands wealth of historical sites, you won’t be disappointed.

From Naxos city centre (Chora) in the west, the coast south is almost one continuous sandy beach stretching for almost 30 km. Even at the busiest times it’s possible to be on the beach alone. Rise early enough and find your very own little cove for the day. During the hot summer months these beaches are cooled by the prevailing north wind (meltemi). Windsurfers and kitesurfers arrive from all over Europe for some of the best conditions possible. Horse riding and scuba diving are available for the more adventurous.Beach life is not for everyone, there are hundreds of kilometres of tarmac roads. Naxos is 448 sq km; it has about 40 villages and a population of 19,000. The road north of Naxos town has glorious scenery and many rocky beaches. Stop for lunch in Apollonas and visit the Kouros statue which was carved in the 7th century BC. The journey back through the high mountain villages is spectacular. Koronos and Moni for amazing views and 6th century churches.

Naxos is not as commercialized as some of its Cycladic neighbours. This partly due to its self sufficiency, often supplying the surrounding islands with fruit, olives and potatoes. They also mine for marble and emery. And partly because of the airport not being able to handle international flights. Olympic airlines operate a daily 50 seat connection from Athens Eleftherios Venizelos airport. The vast majority of visitors arrive by ship from the main ports of Athens (Piraeus and Rafina) and the surrounding islands. Tourism has grown considerably since the airport opened in 1993, but not enough to change the special character of Naxos. Most of the commercialism is confined to the attractive port of Naxos town, with a magical mix of ancient and modern, the port is dominated by a Venetian castle. Narrow paths and streets wind their way down to the seafront, where you can find all the modern amenities of a busy town, banks, restaurants, cafes, travel agencies and supermarkets.

Comfort and tranquillity near lovely beaches

SH + DM Marseille, France
Review Submitted: September 25, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
Warm welcome from the owner, who picked us up from the port and showed us round the house. As advertised, this was a modern house on three levels, with a terrace on each one. The top terrace, in particular, offered a beautiful view of the sea and Paros, with wonderful sunsets. The bedrooms were extremely comfortable and the bathrooms clean and modern. The whole house was spotlessly clean. On arrival, the owner informed us that earlier guests had broken the washing machine, so we had to do without. The owner did, however, show us where the local laundry was and offered to drop off and pick up for us any laundry we needed doing. As it happened, we didn't require this, but the offer was there and appreciated. Otherwise, all the amenities advertised were available. The doors and windows of the house are all fitted with mosquito screens, as the area does apparently have a mosquito problem. During our stay, however, none got into the house and our nights were mosquito-free. Long periods out on the terraces might have proved more bothersome, perhaps, but this is a problem one often encounters near water in the Mediterranean in general. We did not hire a vehicle for this week, having done enough driving and touring during our stay on another island. We were drawn to this property because of its comfort and its proximity to beaches (easy walking distance - 10 to 20 mins for some of the most beautiful beaches and clean, turquoise waters in the Cyclades). Some of the beaches have loungers and parasols, though others are just as nature intended and quite stunning. The beaches are so long, you can always find a quiet spot if you wish, or, if you prefer, you can remain within easy striking distance of one of the many good tavernas dotted all along the beach road. Practical bus service about 5 minutes from the house to Naxos town. Buses run till midnight in September and taxis are also affordable as the house is only about 8 km from the town centre. Naxos town, particularly the old kastro district, is well worth visiting and climbing up through the winding streets for a more historical atmosphere than that offered on the waterfront. All in all, this property was excellent value for money, clean, comfortable and ideally located for those looking to unwind in a very pretty spot which, though quiet, offers most of the essentials if you do not wish to explore any further (though the island has a great deal to offer in addition to its beaches).

Excellent base from where to explore Naxos

L + S London, Athens
Review Submitted: August 27, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
We had a great stay here in June/July 2009. The location of this house is excellent: close to the best beaches of Naxos, and within easy reach of Naxos town/ harbour and airport, at a peaceful location in Agia Anna, and with fantastic views (especially from the top levels). The house has everything you will need for your holiday, and it will suit especially two couples, allowing lots of privacy and at the same time providing ample common living areas. We found the host very helpful and friendly, and would not hesitate to go back another year.
The only problem we had was dealing with the mosquitoes in that particular part of Naxos. They are there night and day! We've travelled all over the world, but never before found this stopping us from sitting outside and having a good time. Not so in this case. Even though the house is well equipped with mosquito nets, blinds etc, it was impossible to sit outside and enjoy the great views that this house really affords.
Overall, this house offers a really good base for a family or two couples/ sets of friends to explore one of the most beautiful islands in the Cyclades.
I'd highly recommend day trips to Apeiranthos and to Apollonas (you'll need a car). Allow lots of time to explore Naxos town (stay away from the seafront and instead look for the back streets, all the way up to the castro and the Venetian museum). Many good tavernas can be found on the beach between Agia Anna and Plaka, but for the best one (called 'To Petrino'), go a bit further past Plaka, as far as the bus will go. It has really good authentic food (and I am Greek!), in a great setting, and is run by a nice friendly family. For drinks, try 'Manolo's Bar' in Agia Anna.
Naxos is an island most people return to. Have a great time.
