This beautiful moated chateau is the perfect place to unwind. Completely secluded but within walking distance of shops, restaurants, markets and bars etc. It is located at the end of a long tree lined drive with white gates that lead past the chapel, through another set of gates and a vehicle bridge over the moat. All rooms are comfortably furnished, and there are plenty of places to explore within the grounds. The chateau has its own chapel, lake, wine cave and 5 acres of grounds. A sun terrace with barbecue facilities, swings, boule and football area. As a whole the chateau has 12 bedrooms (sleeps 24), 4 receptions rooms, 2 kitchens, a library, laundry and plenty of parking. Most bedrooms have en-suite facilities. The chateau can be rented as two smaller units, so it's also ideal for groups of any size really. One apartment sleeps 14 whilst the other sleeps 10. During low season B&B can be provided for 35 euros per person per night (not available during mid or high season dates)

Visitors enter via 3 steps through glazed French doors into an impressive paneled entrance hall (the original grand entrance to the chateau), with chandelier, marble floor and dining area for up to 14 people. Off this is a modern kitchen and a superb panelled sitting room with views over the moat. There is a library with a wide range of books and a half size pool/snooker table, a laundry room, cloak room and two toilets. A grand foot bridge leads out from the dining room across the moat to the rear gardens. Another doorway leads out onto the sun terrace with views of the lake and the front garden. Steps lead from here to the parking area in front of the chateau. Upstairs on the second floor there are 7 bedrooms, most of which are en-suite and two toilets.

The town of Gorron has many services (detailed information available before or on arrival). These include banks, doctors, dentist, supermarkets, restaurants, bars, swimming pool, golf, sports centre, fishing, parks and walks. Horse riding, sailing, canoeing and windsurfing near by at Ambrieres les Vallees and Bayonne. The nearby town of Domfront is perched high up and naturally well fortified. Many narrow streets with shops and restaurants are to be found. Likewise the town of Fougeres boasts the largest medieval castle in Europe. Medieval history is all around at Mayenne, Laval and Lassay les Chateaux. Roman history too at the Jublains fort. The spa town and therapeutic centre of Bagnoles-de-l'Orne is to the north, and the Calvados region too. Wild rugged coastlines, broken by sandy beaches along the Brittany and Normandy coasts, and le Mont St-Michel. Seafood paradise, washed down with Saumur wine from the Loire. Too much relaxation? Then try some shopping therapy at Rennes or Caen.

Additional information about rental rates

  • For guests booking B&B accomodation please note we normally charge 35 euros per person per night (breakfast included). Evening and lunchtime meals can be provided at additional cost.
  • A security deposit of £250 (300 euros) is payable on booking. This deposit also acts as cover for breakages and is normally refunded in full after your holiday providing the property is left clean and tidy. If excessive cleaning is required this is charged at 20 euros/hour.
  • The full renting charge is payable 8 weeks before your holiday commences. If you have to cancel your holiday we will only refund the full amount if you cancel 8 weeks or more before the start of your holiday. If you cancel between 4 and 8 weeks before the start of your holiday we will refund 50%. Normally no refund is given when cancelling within 4 weeks of the start of the holiday. We can make exceptions of we manage to rebook the dates.

In this configuration the double doors that divide the apartments can be opened and the whole chateau used by large a family group. Linen and towels can be provided at a cost of 10 euros per person.

A really relaxing fortnight had by all

We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived at the Chateau du Bailleul because it had so much more to offer than we expected. The kids didn't miss having a pool at the property since the town of Gorron has good leisure and sport facilities, and is a short bike ride. They also enjoyed boating around in the moat (and amazingly they didn't fall in!)
We toured the region and visited the Roman fort at Jublian and the Mont St Michel. Had a shopping day in Rennes -I didn't realise this city was so chic. Just as good as Paris for choice. We had planned to go to Paris by TGV from Laval since it is on an hour and a half, but glad we headed the otherway and discovered Rennes
Most meals were eaten on the terrace since the weather was great, and it was lovely to hear the bird song all day long and watch the carp swim by (kids may have over fed them a bit with bread).
I would recommend this property based on the activities on site and in the local region, and it's ease of getting to from the UK.
