The village of Competa is set at the foot of the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped range of mountains between Malaga & Granada, that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean.
The village six hundred and fifty metres above sea level and from its flower bedecked streets and plazas there are spectacular views of sea, countryside and mountains. It is still an active and hard working agricultural town which makes an important contribution to the industry of the province with abundant crops of olives, almonds, grapes, raisins, figs and, above all, its famous wine, Vino de Cómpeta, which is renowned worldwide.
Competa, dating back to the Moors, and whose style is reflected in its winding streets and whitewashed houses, has many excellent restaurants and bars and the local inhabitants are content to sit in the central square, drink coffee and wish the stranger, Buenos dias!
