Golf: Situated right on the Golf des Fontenelles and overlooking the third hole, there's excellent golf just a short stroll away. The course is in rolling countryside with oaks and pines lining broad fairways. Plenty of challenge, but a good score is on the cards if you keep out of the water hazards. There are good practice facilities (covered driving range, pitching and putting greens) and a nice clubhouse serving great-value food. It's run by Formule Golf, who also have other courses within easy reach: la Domangère, a really lovely but difficult inland course with some very pretty holes (as well as a 600-metre par 5!), Port Bourgenay near the sea, and Pornic, set close to the centre of this attractive seaside town. Buy a Formule Golf pass to play as many holes per day as you like on any of the courses - a full round away and 9 at home in the evening, perhaps - very good value. Not in the FG network, but well worth visiting, is St Jean de Monts. The first nine are set in a lovely wooded area, with some tricky tee-shots, sometimes blind, to narrow fairways. You then have some true links holes over the back nine, with spectacular views towards the Ile d'Yeu. Golf courses in the area are all maintained to very high standards, with good greens - but the best part is the relaxed feel to golf here - the courses are uncrowded and the atmosphere friendly and informal. Tee off in the evening and you may be the only one playing.
