Photos and Description of this Scottish Borders holiday cottage
3 bedroom cottage in Scottish Borders near Borders Abbeys Way

Monks Cottage is a charming sandstone cottage which backs onto sloping woodland going down to a stream, which flows into the nearby River Teviot (small pebble beach - good for swimming for children; fishing can be arranged.) It has three bedrooms (one with a small en-suite shower room), a bathroom and an open-plan kitchen/living room with a wood-burning stove. The cottage stands on its own, fronting a small country road and you can walk straight out of it onto a section of the Borders Abbeys Way walk. The village of Denholm (with butcher (recommended)), post office, two pubs, two cafes, antique shop) is about two miles away and all the many and varied delights of the Scottish Borders are within easy reach. Come and discover the delights of autumn; beautiful colours, lovely walks and cosy evenings curled up in fornt of the wood-burner!

Lovely country cottage.

Review Submitted: August 10, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
A fantastic cottage! We found it to be very comfortable, cosy and extremely well equipped. The beds are very comfortable as is the living area. Although it rained for a couple of days during our stay, we were lovely and warm in the cottage. The heating worked fine, plenty of hot water and the log fire was great!
The cottage is situated along a quiet country road and there are some lovely walks straight from the door. Our children are 11 and 13 and had a great time playing in the woods and stream behind the cottage, they are already asking when we can go back!.
There is plenty to see and do in the local area and there are lots of information leaflets in the cottage with ideas.
Jo was very helpful and sent us information about opening times of local shops etc.
A very enjoyable stay, thank you.

Borders Cottage Stay

Review Submitted: September 10, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
My husband and I along with his mother and her 3 sisters stayed at Monks cottage for 4 days, after which the 2 of us left for home in the states and the 4 others remained for an additional week and a half. The cottage is small, cozy and has 2 bathrooms. The one en-suite is quite small and the shower is hard to maneuver in. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessities and the fireplace is a nice touch. The area is ideal if you want to spend anytime in the Borders area, with the towns of Denholm and Hawick nearby. The cottage sits along a small street and the parking area for the vehicle is also very close to the street. Although it is a quiet area there is some traffic. The stream behind the cottage is beautiful but it is a steep slope down. The owner brought firewood over to us when we asked if there was any available. We had also asked for more pictures but never received them. It was a comfortable stay but there are a couple of items that need attention and we have mentioned them to the owner. The heater didn't operate correctly at certain times of the day. The cottage has a moldy smell to it and there are bugs. Apparently this is a common problem in this area. I would recommend this cottage to 2 couples and 2 singles, as there are 3 rooms, two with a double bed and 1 with two single beds. The cottage is old but quaint. Jo or Patsey were helpful when we called with concerns.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, we do get midges ("bugs") in Scotland and these tend to be worse in damp and humid weather such as we had in August. We recommend the product "Skin So Soft" by Avon, which we provided to these tenants to help them out. Please note that we do say on the website that only an initial supply of firewood is provided. The heating was on a timer but was adjusted to be on the whole time for the tenants. Please be assured that the heating system does work correctly. The cottage is on a small quiet country road about two miles from the village of Denholm. More photos of the cottage are on the way!
