Borders Cottage Stay
Review Submitted: September 10, 2009
Date of Stay: August 2009
My husband and I along with his mother and her 3 sisters stayed at Monks cottage for 4 days, after which the 2 of us left for home in the states and the 4 others remained for an additional week and a half. The cottage is small, cozy and has 2 bathrooms. The one en-suite is quite small and the shower is hard to maneuver in. The kitchen is equipped with all the necessities and the fireplace is a nice touch. The area is ideal if you want to spend anytime in the Borders area, with the towns of Denholm and Hawick nearby. The cottage sits along a small street and the parking area for the vehicle is also very close to the street. Although it is a quiet area there is some traffic. The stream behind the cottage is beautiful but it is a steep slope down. The owner brought firewood over to us when we asked if there was any available. We had also asked for more pictures but never received them. It was a comfortable stay but there are a couple of items that need attention and we have mentioned them to the owner. The heater didn't operate correctly at certain times of the day. The cottage has a moldy smell to it and there are bugs. Apparently this is a common problem in this area. I would recommend this cottage to 2 couples and 2 singles, as there are 3 rooms, two with a double bed and 1 with two single beds. The cottage is old but quaint. Jo or Patsey were helpful when we called with concerns.

Owner's Response: Unfortunately, we do get midges ("bugs") in Scotland and these tend to be worse in damp and humid weather such as we had in August. We recommend the product "Skin So Soft" by Avon, which we provided to these tenants to help them out. Please note that we do say on the website that only an initial supply of firewood is provided. The heating was on a timer but was adjusted to be on the whole time for the tenants. Please be assured that the heating system does work correctly. The cottage is on a small quiet country road about two miles from the village of Denholm. More photos of the cottage are on the way!
