Entertainment/Restaurants:
There are several restaurants in Allevard to choose from ranging from Creperie la Flambée in the village square to perhaps my favourite, Pizzéria Vieux Moulin, which looks out over the beautiful meandering river Isere. This restaurant serves magnificent and inexpensive pizzas and a whole range of other dishes. Marco and Denise will look after your every need.
L'Auberge du Bessard is also well worth a visit.
The European Pub run by the very welcoming and amiable George can be found a few metres across the Bridge next to the river. There is a pool table and table football in a room separate from the bar area. Pub Red Erik is also a favourite of mine with its North American Indian theme music and décor in evidence. This pub also has a large pool table and table football or 'babyfoot'. The town of Allevard has a local casino (50 metres from Résidence) where you can play black jack, roulette, slot machines. It also has a bar and restaurant. There is a cinema and disco in the centre.
Services:
The village of Allevard is very well served by a host of services. There are two pharmacies in the village and no less than three dentists and 6 doctors/GP's! There are also two florists, two hairdresssers, a butcher's (boucherie/charcuterie) and two Boulangeries to stock up on your croissants and pains au chocolat! The local tourist office is in the village square just opposite the fountain. For those of you wishing to do some weekly shopping there is a mini 'Casino' supermarket beside the village square and a 'Tabac' where newspapers/cigarettes can be bought. The two local banks are the Banque de Savoie and Le Crédit Agricole from where you can withdraw cash - both of them have outside ATM's. Allevard also has 2 child-minding facilities for children from 3 months to 6 years of age - available Monday to Friday from 7.30 to 18.30. Allevard is a child friendly village hence the huge range of activities available for this age group. There is a lovely playground adjacent to my apartment.
Other information:
There is a market every Thursday morning in Place de Verdun where a whole range of items from farm produce to clothing is sold. For those of you interested in visiting local farms to find out about their local products and their methods of production, you can visit the Miellerie de Mongoutoux in nearby St Pierre d'Allevard where you will learn more a about the production of honey and gingerbread. The nearby farm of Ferme de la grangette explains all about the production of milk, Raclette cheese, and different types of meat while La coquille de Belledonne specialises in snail (escargot) production and local pork meat production. The local poney and horse riding club is located nearby in La Ferriere. The Parc Aventure in adjacent St. Pierre d'Allevard is an absolute must for all children and adults. Activities such as paragliding, tree climbing (with safety harness) and rope bridge crossing to name but a few are offered. The centre has two supervised swimming pools for smaller children.
