Perfect Riverside Holiday Venue

Embee London
Review Submitted: November 8, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
This was our first water based family holiday. We found it exciting to have to be ferried across the river with all our stuff. It was a big plus to have the use of the boats with the cottage and not to have to rent them as well.

I suspect our first efforts to navigate the canoe down to the village gave a lot of amusement to anyone else around at the time. That was the best thing about being there, using the boats and once we hired a local slow motor boat to go further but, tbh, we found that less fun than the canoe and the rowing boat with the little engine. One morning I went out alone before other river users were awake and paddled a couple of miles on my own in the early morning mist, it was just me, the river and the reeds and the ducks and swans and a heron, it was wonderful. In fact, there was a lot of wild life to see, and quite a lot of it expected to be given bread etc, but the highlight was seeing an otter in the water by the opposite bank.

It is a lovely cottage, extremely well equiped, using the kitchen was like being at home. The bath was lovely, deep and just the right length. The beds were extremely comfortable, both settees were ideal for collapsing onto after a hard fun day and my son loved the games attic with the xbox. The wood burning stove was a lot more fun than the central heating, which we turned right down so we could use the stove.

The owners were very on the ball with answering all my daft email questions with patience.

The area was also lovely for exploring by bike, both along the riverside path and by road. We had a nice lunch in a friendly pub in Potter Heigham but I can't remember its name - not the one close to the bridge but further on, closer to the Post Office. The area was also very good for photography.

I would strongly recomend this for a holiday for anyone who likes rivers and boats and an outside sort of holiday but with a very comfortable base to return to.

I've just seen I'm meant to indicate who I would recomend this too, so I'll explain a little. I doubt it would be easy for a person with mobility difficulties to enjoy this cottage, but other disabilities wouldn't be a problem, IMHO, and maybe its not what you might think of first for teenagers but my daughter of 15 enjoyed it even though she's usually a city girl. I think anyone would enjoy a holiday here if they like the water and a degree of seclusion.

lovely riverside retreat

Annj Colchester, Essex, UK
Review Submitted: November 4, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
The only regret about our holiday here was that we couldn't stay longer. The initial excitement of arriving is heightened by the fact that the cottage can only be reached on foot or by boat, which also adds to the relaxing feel of the cottage with the river flowing by at the front and the nature reserve at the rear.

It is easy to feel at home here . The accomodation is very comfortable, well furnished and extremely well equipped with everything from bottle openers and bicycles to a tv/games space hidden in the roof. For three adults, two children and a small dog there was more than sufficient room and more than sufficient varied activities to keep everyone amused.

We enjoyed exploring the river, catching (and eating) fish right on the doorstep, the unique shopping experience of Potter Higham's famous department store, but most of all just sitting watching the river flow by.

The owners are very friendly and couldn't have been more helpful. Arrangements were easily made and the whole process was very smooth. I certainly hope to visit again and would certainly reccommend it to friends.

Brilliant & Unique Holiday Cottage Experience

LynneSmidge County Durham
Review Submitted: August 11, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
This year we chose to holiday in the UK, after hours and hours trawling the internet for something suitable, I accidently came accross this cottage. The holiday experience at this cottage was quite unique, as you can not get access with your car! It is only accessed by boat or a charming walk from the local village alongside a nature reserve. We absolutely loved it. The cottage is very charming, obviously well loved and cared for and a credit to its owners Maureen and Mick. My children loved the riverside location, the excellent fishing and the journey to anywhere by boat! It was such a refreshing change to get about without a car. Maureen met us by boat and ferry'd us the 200 yards across the river to the cottage. The cottage had absoutely everything you could possibly need and I cant remember the last time we all played Cludo!!

I would definately return for another holiday and have told all of my family and friends. Maureen & Mick were so friendly and couldn't do enough for us. Communication was brilliant from emails to directions.
Thank you both

Lynne (County Durham)
