Lagos was an important harbour at the time of the Great Discoveries and it was from here that most of the African expeditions put to sea. Surrounding the old centre of this former capital of the Algarve (1576 to 1756) still stands an almost complete city wall. Apart from being a seaside resort and a fishing port, Lagos is also an important yachting centre organising international regattas. A fine new marina welcomes boats sailing in from the Atlantic from all over the world.
The beaches around Lagos are some of the most beautiful of the Algarve, like Praia de Dona Ana, which is within walking distance from town centre, then Praia do Camilo, a bit further on, and Meia Praia, whose golden sands stretch for approximately 4 kms from Lagos to Alvor. There are plenty of first class restaurants in the town centre for all tastes. The most popular dish in the Algarve is fish which is caught daily, and to accompany there are also a fantastic range of regional wines to choose from.
