Swainby sits just inside the North Yorkshire Moors National Park, has the amenities of a local shop, two village pubs, The Black Horse and the Blacksmiths Arms both serving good food and just a just a minute or so away.
The Cleveland Way passes close to the village as does the National Cycleway. The village is close to the ruins of Whorlton Castle that was abandoned after the Black Death in the 14th Century, it is a gentle walk away. Swainby was probably built after this abandonment. In the 19th Century, the village housed the miners who worked the nearby hills for both ironstone and jet. The market town of Stokesley is less than 6 miles away, Northallerton 10 miles, Middlesbrough 14 miles, Helmsley 21 miles and Whitby 35 miles – all easily reached driving through picturesque scenery.
