Poppies and Sorrel Cottage are two well-equipped and comfortable homes converted from farm buildings surrounded by meadows on the edge of Padstow, ideally located for a holiday in this beautiful area of North Cornwall. Each cottage has 2 parking spaces. With lovely kitchens and bathrooms, the properties have contemporary furnishings and all modern conveniences yet retain their original character with slate roofs, solid walls and courtyards, nestled among farmland but within half a mile of shops and facilities. Poppies has 3 bedrooms (2 double, 1 twin) with a bathroom for each bedroom. The living area is open plan with leather settees, pine table and chairs and two sets of patio doors opening on to a pretty courtyard with BBQ. Sorrel Cottage has 2 bedrooms, each with its own ensuite plus a downstairs WC. The living area is open plan with leather settees, pine table and chairs and double doors to a walled courtyard with BBQ. It also has a garden. Linen and towels provided.

Poppies has an open plan living area with comfortable and contemporary fittings including leather settee and chairs, plenty of cushions, digital TV, DVD, video, hifi and iPod speakers. The floor is laminated wood with a comfy rug. The dining area has a pine table and six chairs and the kitchen is fully equipped with quarry tiled floor and granite work surfaces. There is a walled courtyard with BBQ and seating. There is a double bedroom and twin bedroom upstairs and a double bedroom downstairs. The upstairs double has an ensuite shower room, there is another upstairs bathroom with shower over and a handy downstairs shower room, ideal for when you come back from the beach. All bedrooms have windows overlooking the courtyard. The cottage has books, games, guidebooks and toys for children. The hallway has room for boots and coats and there is an understairs cupboard with surfboards. Central heating and instant hot water are provided, together with linen and towels.

The famous harbour town of Padstow draws visitors all year round, thanks to its unspoilt charm as a historic (and still working) fishing port surrounded by fabulous sandy beaches and spectacular scenery. The many attractions in and around the town include RIck Stein's world-famous restaurants and cookery school, the Camel Trail, Trevose Golf and Country Club, boutique shopping, surfing, boat rides, fishing trips, cycling, coastal walks, historic houses and gardens. An ideal holiday base for all ages with plenty to do whatever the weather. The acclaimed Eden Project is a short drive away and Tintagel (home of King Arthur's Castle), Rock, the Lost Gardens of Helligan, St Michael's Mount, Port Isaac (filming location for Doc Martin) and St Ives (with its own Tate Gallery) are all within easy reach, as is the busy town of Newquay and numerous child-friendly attractions. The area is also a haven for wildlife and birdwatching and is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty.

  • All bookings run from Saturday to Saturday with the exception of Christmas and New Year.
    Short breaks available during off-peak periods by arrangement.
    Christmas and New Year changeover for 2009 is Tuesday - ie 22 December and 29 December.
    Under-occupancy rates may be considered out of season.
  • To secure a booking a deposit of £100 is required, with the balance payable 8 weeks before your holiday.
    A £100 security deposit is required at the time the balance is paid. This is fully refundable if no damage or loss of keys.
  • Rates include utilities, linen and towels. Please bring your own beach towels.

Eating and Drinking: Foodies are spoilt for choice with a range of eateries to suit all palates and budgets, from Rick Stein's famous Seafood Restaurant to his newest venue The Cornish Arms on the road to St Merryn. Fish and chips and traditional pasty shops can be found throughout the town and nearby, while our guests love Custard Diner in Padstow, which serves delicious tea and cakes as well as meals. If you're venturing further afield, Jamie Oliver's Fifteen at Watergate Bay north of Newquay is also recommended by our visitors. For those dining at home, Tescos is a 2 minute drive from Poppies and Sorrel Cottage - or why not book an online delivery before you leave home to save you shopping after a long journey? On the harbour there's an array of fresh fish to buy, caught daily, while lots of takeaway restaurants will deliver food to your door. And not forgetting Cornish ice cream - Roskilly's orange and mascarpone wins my vote!

Top Ten things we like to do: 1. Take the ferry across the water to Rock for a picnic among the dunes ~ 2. Cycle to Wadebridge along the scenic Camel Trail (5 miles each way along the edge of the estuary) ~ 3. Have a rugged walk at Hawker's Cove and buy a yummy lunch at Padstow Farm Shop on the way back ~ 4. Go surfing at Constantine - fantastic and sometimes scary waves ~ 5. Walk around the shops in Padstow then buy Cornish pasties to eat by the harbour ~ 6. Go rock pooling in Trevone followed by a coffee from Madrips cafe ~ 7. Take a day trip to St Michael's Mount - well worth the journey ~ 8. Sample Rick Stein's fare at The Cornish Arms - best value of his eateries ~ 9. Experience the legend of King Arthur at Tintagel ~ 10. Visit Port Isaac - pretty fishing village and filming location for Doc Martin ~

This was my sixth stay at Poppies and one of the most enjoyable as the property equipment is continually updated. The double bed upstairs was especially comfortable and the new sofas downstairs looked and felt terrific. Having bedlinen and towels provided was great. The availability of highchair, games, books and body boards was much appreciated. We are hoping that one year the weather will be good enough for us to use the barbecue! Poppies is very handy not only for both walking into Padstow and getting to Trevone but also for going further afield, to avoid the holiday traffic around Padstow itself.

We have stayed at Poppies for 2 years now and find the cottage is set in a quiet location, just 5 minutes from Padstow. My mum is disabled and we find it very hard to find any holiday lets that provide for her needs. This cottage offers everything we could wish for, home from home. We have been coming to cornwall for 19years and still do not tire of the surroundings. This year we got the sun yeah! Even on bad days you can just kick back and relax in the comfort of the cottage or take a walk to one of the fab beaches, our best one is Trevone as it is clean, child friendly and does not allow dogs during the summer season. If you do have dogs then you could always go to Harlyn Bay.
We have been so pleased with our stay at poppies that we have booked for next year. We were so happy with the location that we recommended it to two of our friends and they managed to book other cottages on site. We had a great time socialising and just enjoying our time together. Another brilliant holiday.

poppies and sorrel cottage

We love these two cottages! Having stayed at both cottages over the past 5years (Poppies 2yrs & Sorrel cottage the past 3years) they both come with the highest of recommendations. Poppies cottage is a perfect place for a family of 4. Our switch to Sorrel cottage was to accommodate a bigger group of 7 (4adults & 3children) – we have such a great time that we tend to have family our friends joining us.

Location of both cottages is perfect = quiet country lane with private parking, no more than 5minutes drive from Padstow harbour car park and approx 15minute drive from Trevone Bay (recommended if you have kids).

Both cottages are extremely good bases for spending a week in Cornwall – they’re spotlessly clean, well equipped with all the necessities to keep everyone entertained should the weather not be so good or if you are trying to cut back on the pounds (sterling or weight watching wise!) by avoiding some of the great nearby restaurants. We are planning to go back again next year – enough said!
Owner's Response: Thank you for a lovely review - I agree it's a great location to enjoy with friends and family. Some larger groups book both our cottages so you can spend time together but also have a bit of space when you need it. Just to avoid confusion, could I point out that Poppies is our bigger cottage which sleeps 6 and Sorrel Cottage sleeps 4.
