Photos and Description of this Central Portugal holiday cottage 6 bed mountain cottage with stunning views.

Set into the mountain, the cottage sleeps 6 people. There are three bedrooms, one with a double bed, one with two singles, the third with a full sized bunk bed. Additionally there are two sofa beds in the living room which could be used If required, together with two armchairs, dining table and chairs, TV for use with videos and DVDs plus free to air satellite channels - and a large open fireplace (free logs). There are two bathrooms, one with shower, a fully equipped kitchen - fridge-freezer, microwave, gas cooker etc. and a patio with brick built barbecue. Supplementary electric heating is provided for winter use. Pets are welcome.

Caratão in Portugal's beautiful Goshawk Mountains (Serra do Açor) is the ideal place to unwind. While Caratão is peacefully off the beaten track, within a short drive are the delightful old towns of Gois - famed for its river bathing - and Arganil - with a good range of shops and many other attractions. Walking, horse riding and canoeing are just some of the activities open to you. Further afield is Coimbra, a former Portuguese capital and still its leading university city - a place of unique charm with a wide range of places to see, good shops, restaurants and cinemas. The whole district is packed with historic towns and villages, reached via journeys of dramatic beauty.

Getting there.: The nearest large city to Caratão is Coimbra. There are rapid train services to the city from Porto and Lisbon. Car hire in Portugal is among the cheapest in western Europe. There is an inexpensive toll motorway which connects Coimbra to both Porto and Lisbon.

No car?: Collection from Coimbra can be arranged for 40 euros with a pause at the supermarket in Arganil (closes 7 pm) or taxi for about 50 euros. An early school bus runs to Arganil on weekdays and returns in the evening. On Tuesday a bus runs to the market in Gois about nine am and on Thursdays to the market in Arganil, returning about 1.15pm. There are many good, long walks starting from the cottage.

Caratão boasts its own gifted Sculptor. As well as viewing his local studio, one further example of his many works is to be found in the museum situated in the unique ancient village of Piódão, which rewards intrepid travellers with its precarious situation, traditional slate houses and good food.

Unbelievable setting!We had the valley to ourselves.
They made our pets very welcome. River bathing at Gois was well organised, clean and relaxing. Locals very friendly but not intrusive.
