Alpe d'Huez - where to begin? Known for good reason as the 'île au soleil' (the island in the sun) this fantastic resort sits at 1800m on south facing slopes, with incredible views of the surrounding mountains. A cycling mecca, Alpe d'Huez is world famous for its links to the Tour de France, and the legendary 21 bends (13.8 km with 1120m vertical ascent), but it also boasts +200km of moutainbike trails and hosts the Megavalanche World Cup Downhill MTB event. But it's not just about bikes - there is also a huge sports centre, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, climbing, ice-skating, riding, paragliding, walking, golf, clay-pigeon shooting, via ferrata...or you can even just relax and work on a tan! There are a host of great places to eat out (this is France after all) and a lively nightlife for those who want it. Nearby attractions include canyoning and rafting in the valley, the Ecrins National Park and summer skiing 35km away in Les Deux Alpes - one week really just isn't enough!
