Location: Assisi in Italy
Car: not necessary
Assisi should not really need an introduction. It is a well preserved medieval town with Roman remains and for the past eight hundred years it has attracted pilgrims as the birth place of St. Francis of Assisi. It is on a hillside so that wherever you look you can see views of either the valley, or of Mount Subasio, which is covered in snow during Winter time. The Mount Subasio Regional Park is only a few miles from Assisi and it is ideal for walks. Moreover, it contains historical Franciscan sites such as the Eremo delle Carceri. All around Assisi there are olive groves, as the vegetation is Mediterranean. The town itself is full of artistic and architectural treasures. The most famous churches are the two Basilicas, built one on top of the other, containing the tomb of St. Francis. Another Basilica contains the tomb of St. Clare. They are some of the finest examples of medieval churches in Europe. There are also Roman museums to be visited, and other ancient churches
